The state park is relatively large, covering 6,700 acres of natural areas and farmland, with a section of the park being a state Wildlands area. Rent an RV in Howard County and enjoy a huge range of recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, and picnicking.

Patuxent River State Park was established in 1962, with the aim of not only bringing recreation but also protection for the land’s natural resources and to preserve the scenic character of the area. Nearby towns include Sunshine and Glenwood, MD, while the bigger cities of Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC, are both within driving distance.

Exploring the Area

Fishing is one of the primary activities in the park and is the reason that meant people choose to rent a camper near Patuxent River State Park. Both Cedar Haven Fishing Area and Queen Anne Fishing Area provide good spots for a catch, both of which are open daily. If you have a fishing license for the Chesapeake Bay area, then you are able to try your luck on the water

A relaxing way to spend the day is by boat, and visitors are welcome to either bring their own vessel in their RV rental or alternatively canoe and kayak rentals are available at the Clyde Watson Boating Area. Access is available to all at this part of the river, and there is also a small beach area so you can kick back and relax after a day of paddling. There are picnic areas here so you can grab a bite to eat and make a day of your boating adventure.

Mountain biking, horse riding, and hiking are all available on untended trails, a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area. The Flowing Free Trail will take you through the park, allowing you to see the ever-changing diverse ecosystems that exist within. Landscapes change from the deciduous forest, grass fields, and shady pines, so you have a good chance of spotting some of the local wildlife. There are several deviations from this route, plus many unmarked trails that are also waiting to be explored.

Camping at Patuxent River State Park

One of the closest campgrounds to Patuxent River State Park is Ramblin’ Pines, offering 200 campsites, 190 of which have full hookups. Camping with an RV couldn’t be easier, as the sites accommodate slide-outs, and there are also a few pull-thru sites available. The grounds are nestled in a beautiful wooded setting, with plenty of amenities to help keep you entertained during your stays, such as horseshoes and a seasonal swimming pool. There is also catch and release fishing, a general store, exercise room, games room, pet exercise park modern bathhouses, and lots more, making it a very comfortable place to go motorhome camping.

Washington DC / Capitol KOA is another good option to make your camping vacation a good one. One of the biggest benefits to this campground is the free shuttle every day that will take you directly to the U.S Capitol. The campground is set on 50 acres of rolling countryside and offers a variety of RV sites. There is a relaxing outdoor pool, outdoor billiards, basketball, ping-pong, and even a jumping pillow. During the summer months, families can take part in lots of fun activities.

Exploring the Area

Patuxent River State Park is located close to one of the biggest treetop adventures in the state. Not for the faint-hearted, Go Ape take you up 50 foot into the trees where you can cross obstacles, slide down zip lines and even have a go on the heart-stopping Tarzan swing. This high ropes course has been designed to offer a truly thrilling experience, and guests should expect to spend at least 2-3 hours up in the trees and then sliding down again. The longest Zipline is 400 feet and is one of the highlights of the adventure.

Those interested in art should pay a visit to the African Art Museum of Maryland. The museum houses many treasured objects that reflect traditional societies, from Morocco to South Africa. Inside you'll find a huge collection of masks, textiles, sculptures, jewelry, household items, instruments, and lots more. It can be a fascinating place to visit and learn more about some of these unique cultures.

Just an hour's drive away is the city of Washington, DC. There is so much to see in the city, including the National Gallery of Art, the American History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, Holocaust Memorial Museum, and much more. Pay a visit to the White House, take a walk down the path of monuments and memorials, or say hello to the giant pandas in the city zoo, the options are endless.
