Positioned right in the heart of the “mitt” of Michigan is Alma. It was established in 1853 by Ralph Ely. It was originally best known for the Alma Springs Sanitarium that was built in the 1880s, but eventually, when cars were being mass-produced, it became the home of Republic Motor Truck Company. When you book an RV in Alma, you will be perfectly positioned to explore numerous wonderful sites throughout the state of Michigan. You will be a short drive away from the shores of Lake Huron to the east and Lake Michigan to the west. Traveling north along Route 127 and merging into I-75, you will be able to cruise on over the famous Mackinac Bridge leading to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

If you do head that far north in the best RV rental Alma has to offer, be sure to check out Sault Ste. Marie State Forest Area well past Indian River. If you do head up that way, you can head west along either Route 2 or 28 and visit Hiawatha National Forest near Munising. If you prefer to stay a bit closer, you can check out Huron-Manistee National Forests near Muskegon or Roscommon State Forest Area near Houghton Lake.

The Great Outdoors

When Michigan was first settled by the Europeans, many of the native trees had been completely cut down. This is an interesting fact for those who may rent a motorhome in Alma and enjoy the outdoors; they will be hard-pressed to find any truly ancient trees across the lower portion of this state. The trees have long since been replanted and have grown to impressive stature, and because of that, there are wonderful parks to enjoy.

Emerson Park is located in Midland and is a nice place to visit with the motorhome rental from Alma. It is close to downtown and is well-maintained. There is a play area for kids and pleasant walking trails if you want to stretch your legs and get outside for a bit.

Although Alma is a relatively small town, it’s proximity to Midland means you can also consider checking out the Chippewa Nature Center. This is a museum that explores the Saginaw-Chippewa history and culture. It offers this history in an innovative way and is an interesting spot to spend a couple of hours when exploring the area with a campervan rental from Alma.

The Midland City Forest is an absolutely gorgeous place to walk, especially on a nice, warm summer day. There are plenty of trails that weave in and out, and it’s perfect for hiking, walking, and even biking.

RV Parks

RV parks are the best way to enjoy this incredible countryside. If you want to simply relax, check out Leisure Lake Family Campground in Sumner. They have pull-through sites and big rig access, which can be great when you have a large Alma motorhome rental. They have full hookup service as well, including 50 amp electric. If you have a dog traveling with you, they allow pets, and you can get waterfront access, but you may need to call ahead to see if those sites are available.

The St. Louis Campground isn’t located in the famous city in Missouri, but rather St. Louis, Michigan. It is a large campground with restrooms and showers. They also have a playground which is ideal for kids up to 12 years of age. They have electric and water hookups, but no sewer. When you come here with a luxury RV rental from Alma, you don’t have to worry about how big it is because they have pull-through sites and big rig access. The Lake of Dreams is located in Merrill, and it offers water and electric hookups. Their electric service is both 30 and 50 amp, and they do have a camp store for some basic amenities.

You may find a Walmart store or two around the area where you might be able to park the Alma camper rental for a night or two, just be sure to get permission from store management prior to your stay.

Exploring the City

You can certainly check out the small downtown part of Alma, but if you want a truly memorable experience, visit Dow Gardens in Midland. Originally established in 1899, this 110-acre garden attracts over 100,000 people every year. You can enjoy the unique and gorgeous landscape, go on a tour of the historic Pines Home, and take part in any number of hands-on educational programs. This can be a memorable excursion when you rent a motorhome in Alma.

At a convergence of the Tittabawassee and Chippewa Rivers in Midland sits The Tridge (tri-bridge). Here you can check out a farmers market, rent kayaks, go for walks, enjoy fireworks when special events are going on, and the kids can enjoy a playground, skate park, and a water park during the summer. It’s a colorful site and a three-piece bridge.

In the heartland of Michigan, you will find plenty of farms dotting the landscape. As a result, you won’t have any trouble finding farmers markets to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables. Wherever your Alma RV rental journey takes you, you can eat well and enjoy a wide selection of locally grown produce.
