Spanning 843 acres across Minnesota sits Sakatah Lake State Park. This beautiful area of parkland lies on the shores of Sakatah Lake, which is a natural widening of the Cannon River, near the town of Waterville. Sakatah Lake State Park got the name from those native to the area, calling it Sakatah, which means ‘singing hills.’

Big Woods is a short loop that is ideal for a short stroll through the woodlands, and the Wahpekute Trail offers wonderful views of the lake. Part of the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail stretches throughout the park and the city streets of Waterville. Nature lovers flock to go motorhome camping at Sakatah Lake State Park every year, hoping to see some creatures that call the park their home. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, squirrels, minks, raccoons, and even coyotes, all of which are regularly spotted by visitors. Bird watchers may also get the chance to see woodpeckers, hawks, and owls.

You can't go RV camping at Sakatah Lake State Park without heading out onto the water. There is also a fishing pier by the picnic area, and fishing is available all year round. Choose your spot from the three and a half miles of shoreline and try your luck with a line.

Campers can camp directly in the state park RV campgrounds, at Sakatah Lake State Park, which has 62 sites available. The sites are arranged in four loops, with some offering electrical hookups. Bring the whole family, including your pet, and make the most of the beautiful surroundings. Amenities include hot showers, flush toilets, drinking water, and grills. During the summer months, the sites can be reserved well in advance to ensure you get the best spot.

For those that want to camp in an RV near Minneapolis, Minneapolis KOA is another good option. This KOA is filled with several useful amenities and attractions to help make your stay comfortable. The sites here are large and shady, and there are a large swimming pool and children’s playground to help keep the younger ones entertained. There is a well-stocked camp store to help you if you forget to pack something and plenty of free WiFi.

Exploring the Area

FlyOver America is located in the Mall of America and is a ride like no other. While staying safe in your seat, the simulator will allow you to fly over some of the most iconic sights in the state, with added effects such as winds, mists, and smells to make it feel as though you are there. The ride also allows you to virtually view the majestic beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, such as the shores of Maui, and peer into the volcanic craters of Big Island. When you don't see enough creatures in the state park, you'll certainly get your fill in Minnesota Zoo. The zoo is home to a huge range of reptiles, birds, fish, and mammals. You could spend a whole day exploring the different exhibits, such as Discovery Bay, the Medtronic Minnesota Trail, Tropics Trail, and Wells Fargo Family Farm, to name a few. Throughout the year, the zoo plays host to a huge number of events, with daily feedings and talks.

Rent a camper near Sakatah Lake State Park and get your adrenaline rush at the Kerfoot Canopy Tour, and soar through the trees. The tour has been voted the second-best canopy tour in America, and with the scenic backdrop of the Minnesota River Valley, that is hardly surprising. You'll be 175 feet above the ground, with 14 zip lines traversing over a mile through the treetops. As well as ziplines, you'll also find a suspension bridge, spiral staircases, and incredible views.
