McCook is a fascinating small town in the little-visited southwestern corner of Nebraska. It’s about an hour's drive from the nearest mid-size town, North Platte, and Interstate 80. It's also less than three hours' drive from the historically rich city of Grand Island. The town was founded in the late 1800s when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad built an extension to it; it was named after Union general Alexander McCook.
