Information About Las Vegas, NV
Gone are the days when the only reason to go to Las Vegas is to (literally) roll the dice and hope to strike it rich. Of course, casinos are still the city's main draw, but like all other cities elsewhere, wherever the rich and famous go, the best of food, art and entertainment follows.
While Las Vegas is a glittering oasis amidst the seemingly lifeless lunar-like landscape, it is far from the only attraction that attracts mega crowds. Because much of Nevada is desert, renting an RV in Las Vegas is essential if you are to get around in comfort and cover sufficient ground. And you don’t have to worry about finding a place to set up. The federal government owns a third of Nevada’s territory, which means there is plenty of parks to visit with RV rentals in Las Vegas.
The Great Outdoors
Lake Mead, Great Basin, Red Rock Canyon, and Valley of Fire State Parks are just a few of Nevada's standout destinations for lovers of the great outdoors. Endless vistas, ochre-colored rocks, secret coves, mesmerizing caves, scenic drives, forest trails, star-studded skies, and lake cruises all await adventurous travelers who dare to book an RV rental in Las Vegas and stray away from the glitz and glamor of The Strip.
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area may be on the fringes of the Mojave Desert but it brims with 600 species of plant and wildlife uniquely adapted to the environment. There are at least 26 signposted hikes and trails here plus 13 miles of one-way scenic drive. You can find petroglyphs here, but there are plenty more to see in the Valley of Fire, so named for its 40,000 acres of bright red sandstone where petroglyphs dating back more than 2,000 years can be found.
Surprisingly, amidst these parched lands, oases of water-based activities abound. Lake Mead is a perfect side trip for swimming, kayaking, boating, and fishing, especially if you're on the way to the Grand Canyon. The Hoover Dam, which formed Lake Mead, straddles the Nevada-Arizona border.
If you want to go vertical, the 3,632 meter Charleston Peak beckons not only with hiking trails but also ski areas. (After all, 'nevada' in Spanish means 'covered in snow.') And if stargazing is what you're after, the Great Basin National Park has plenty of comfortable spots under one of the darkest night skies in the United States.
Then there's Burning Man, a pop-up metropolis in Nevada's Black Rock Desert that lasts for a week from late August to early September to celebrate "community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance." If you wish to be part of this fleeting village, rent an RV in Vegas and make sure you are self-sufficient.
Rent an RV in Las Vegas, NV if you would like to make the most of your visit. There are RV campsites throughout the state if you wish to go far beyond The Strip.
Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area is perhaps the best equipped state-owned RV camping site in all of Nevada. The site has hookups for water, electricity, and sewer. Because the campsite is located on the shores of the Colorado River, RV campers have access to two miles of sandy shoreline and clear and cool water year round ideal for swimming, fishing and boating Big Bend also makes an ideal spot for a night or two to explore the Mojave Desert about 80 miles to the west.
There's a gas station right on Needles Highway where the Big Bend of the Colorado is located. On the other hand, you have to take your Las Vegas RV rental across the border to Bullhead, Arizona about six miles south to get to the closest Walmart.
If you prefer to be a heartbeat away from the Las Vegas Strip, the Red Rock Canyon, the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, then the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort is better positioned as it’s linked to downtown Las Vegas by RTC Buses run by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. The RV resort is a pet-friendly, full hook-up park with 700 RV sites where you can play mini-golf, soak in a hot tub, withdraw cash or buy groceries onsite. There’s also a Walmart open 24 hours about 12 miles east. As to access to fuel, the Oasis RV resort is surrounded by several 24-hour stations.
Exploring the City
The Strip is to Las Vegas what the yellow brick road is to Emerald City; follow it and you won't get lost. And contrary to popular belief, this posh section of Las Vegas Boulevard doesn’t just lead to the craps table or the slot machines; it has forged its own path to history. The Las Vegas Strip itself has been designated an All-American Road in its own right. And if neon lights tickle you neon pink, it’s also a 4-mile scenic route at night.
More and more families take their camper rental in Las Vegas to enjoy the city’s many child-friendly entertainment options. The Natural History Museum, the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Aquarium, the Streetmosphere at the Venetian, Madame Tussauds, the Ethel M Chocolate Factory, the Fremont Street Experience, tons of circus shows, and the garden maze, treehouse and sprinklers at the Children’s Park in the town square are but a few amusements to keep your children occupied.
Sky's the limit when it comes to how much you should spend in Las Vegas by way of entertainment. But you don't have to part ways with your dollars in order to find suitable entertainment. For art lovers, there's the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the CityCenter with its public artworks, and the "Shards of Color" installation within Crystals.
For retail therapy, there are plenty of places to say goodbye to your dollars, but if you want to sample flavors and shop for wares in one open-air space, the Grand Bazaar Shops across the street from Bellagio is well worth a look. The 1,000-strong Fountains of Bellagio itself deserves more than just a passing glance. And you don’t even have to feel guilty looking at jets of water making a spectacle of themselves. Most of the water use by the Las Vegas Strip is returned to Lake Mead where a variety of water-based adventures awaits.
