Named after early settler Elizabeth Haddon, Haddon Heights is a historic borough on the southern outskirts of Philadelphia. It was incorporated in 1904 from parts of Centre Township and Haddon Township, although the land was settled as early as 1699 by John Hinchman. The community began to develop in 1890 after a passenger station was established for the Atlantic City Railroad, with middle-class families moving into the large residential houses.
Today, Haddon Heights retains its turn-of-the-20th-century railroad suburb feel, with tree-lined streets that make it an ideal place to rent an RV. It’s within easy access of family-friendly RV parks and scenic reserves, as well as the American Revolutionary sites of Philadelphia.
Book an RV rental in Haddon Heights and make a plan to visit the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, which is an extremely popular destination for birdwatching. It encompasses 2,000 acres of low deciduous swamp and oak/pine forests where resident and migratory species come to rest and refuel. Explore one of the walking trails lined by mountain laurel and wild azaleas, with your binoculars at hand to spot Kentucky and prothonotary warblers, as well as Eastern bluebirds and nesting woodpeckers.
Haddon Heights is also within easy access of the Wharton State Forest, which forms part of the extensive New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. This unique area includes not only vast oak-pine forests and sprawling wetlands but also historical berry farms and villages, such as the 18th-century bog iron and glass manufacturing site of Batsto Village. Aside from its scenic hiking trails, you can get a different perspective on the forest while canoeing along the picturesque Mullica River.
Alternatively, head north to the Rancocas State Park, which sprawls along the northern branch of the Rancocas Creek and its bird-filled freshwater tidal marsh. Stretch your legs on the more than eight miles of hiking trails or opt to explore by mountain bike, with an interpretive trail that highlights local points of interest. Horse riders are welcome on the park’s equestrian trails while canoeing and fishing are permitted in the Rancocas Creek.
Pick up your motorhome rental in Haddon Heights and head west to the Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA. This family-friendly (and pet-friendly) campground has a range of pull-through and back-in RV sites that you can select from, as well as a swimming pool, children’s playground, and jumping pillow.
Alternatively, drive south to the Oldman’s Creek Campground, which offers your choice of 20, 30, or 50-amp RV sites. You can get active on the sporting courts or let the kids run loose in the children’s playground, with practical amenities such as a laundromat for catching up on your washing.
If you’re traveling with a big rig, head slightly farther south to the Four Seasons Family Campground, which features both open and wooded sites. Recreational facilities include a swimming pool and sporting courts, as well as an on-site lake where you can swim, canoe and kayak, or go fishing.
Pick up your RV rental near Haddon Heights and enjoy a stroll through Haddon Lake Park in the northwest of the borough. Follow the one-mile-long trail that rings the lake or just relax at one of the tables in the picnic area. Boating and fishing are permitted on the lake, and there are two playground areas where young visitors can roam free.
If you’re interested in the local Revolutionary War history, don’t miss a visit to the Red Bank Battlefield Park in nearby National Park. It encompasses the remains of Fort Mercer and a number of period cannons on the southern shores of the Delaware River where the Battle of Red Bank took place in 1777. The Red Bank Battlefield Park is located adjacent to the Sanitarium Playground at Soupy Island, with this former tuberculosis hospital now a kid-friendly play area complete with a swimming pool and old-fashioned carousel.
Haddon Heights is just 20 minutes’ drive from the center of Philadelphia for those wanting to explore this lively city’s American Revolutionary history. Marvel at the monumental Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed, then recreate your very own Rocky moment outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you’re a foodie, head to the famous Reading Terminal Market where you can pick up a range of artisan produce, as well as feast on one of the city’s legendary Philly cheesesteaks.
Haddon Heights is home to a supermarket where you can find basic supplies, as well as a couple of eateries for dining out. There’s a gas station if you want to fill up your campervan rental in Haddon Heights or you can make the seven-minute drive west to Audobon Crossings where you’ll find a more extensive choice of services.
