Named after William Livingston, the first Governor of New Jersey, Livingston is a small township that was officially incorporated in 1813. It was settled by a group of Newark residents who decided to move west in 1699, negotiating with the Lenni Lenape Native Americans for the purchase of land. Disputes over land ownership eventually led to the Horseneck Riots, which lasted for ten years from 1745.
