Discover Hither Hills State Park

Getting Outdoors

While there's a long list of sights to see and activities to enjoy at Hither Hills State Park, the main attraction here is always that beautiful sandy beach. If you're planning a summer beach getaway on Long Island, this pretty park sits in the ideal location.

For many Hither Hills State Park campers, the best way to pass the day is to spend as much time as possible at the beach. If you're keen to work on your tan, you'll love nothing more than spreading out a towel and catching a few rays along this two-mile stretch of sand.

If the heat ever gets too much, the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean are just a few short steps away for swimmers. When the conditions allow, you can also enjoy surfing and windsurfing here.

Fishing is another popular pastime in the park. All year round, anglers can cast a line into the water straight from the beach and even apply for night fishing permits. There's also a 40-acre freshwater lake within the park where you can try your luck catching largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, and more.

The other main activity for campers to enjoy in Hither Hills State Park is hiking. Some visitors love nothing more than taking a leisurely stroll along the sand and doing a little beachcombing along the way. Others will prefer to head out and explore the park's network of hiking trails — the Hithers Hill Trail offers great water views, while the Walking Dunes Trail gives you a chance to take a closer look to the unique dune system in this part of the world.

Camping at Hither Hills State Park

If you're planning on staying a while in this beautiful park, you can rent an RV in Suffolk County and then book a site in the Hither Hills State Park campground. This 190-site campground is just a short walk away from the ocean, so it's a great place to stay if you love the smell of salty air and the feeling of sand between your toes.

Open from April to November, the campground offers the sort of relaxed atmosphere you only get so close to the coast. Restrooms and showers are clean and well-maintained, but there's not a great deal of space between sites. Hookups aren't available at any sites, but the campground convenience store is a very handy inclusion if you need to stock up on motorhome camping essentials.

It's also worth noting that if you're visiting at the height of summer, this campground can get very busy. You'll need to book well in advance in order to secure yourself a site.

Finally, pets aren't allowed in the campground, so you'll need to leave your dog at home if you're planning on staying here.

Exploring the Area

When your Hither Hills State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end, that doesn't necessarily mean the end of your vacation. With plenty of other lovely destinations nearby, it's well worth extending your journey so you can check out some of the other local attractions.

For example, the beautiful beaches of East Hampton are just a few minutes away, while the nearby LongHouse Reserve sculpture garden is also well worth checking out.

If you'd rather set up camp in another New York state park, you could be looking out over Long Island Sound in Wildwood State Park in around one hour and 15 minutes.

And if you'd rather head somewhere a little more populated, Huntington is less than two hours away. While you're there, make sure you take a tour of Oheka Castle, a historic and majestic Gold Coast mansion.

Whatever type of vacation you're planning, you'll find plenty to entertain and excite on Long Island. Rent a camper near Hither Hills State Park and start exploring the best the park and the surrounding area have to offer.
