Groton is a small town in Connecticut that is most known for General Dynamics Electric Boat, the primary builder for the United States Navy submarines for more than a century. The town is situated just about halfway between Boston and New York City, making it a perfect place to stop over when motorhome camping across the northeast USA. Bluff Point State Park is one of the town’s biggest attractions. Encompassing approximately 806 acres of tidal wetlands, forested sections, and steep cliffs, it is an ideal spot for state park RV camping. To do some RV camping, you’ve got to have a campervan. Not in possession of one? Book an RV in New London County and embark on an unforgettable getaway.

When camping in an RV rental near Bluff Point State Park, you’ll be spoiled for choice over what activities to engage in. More than 200 different species of birds have been sighted at the Bluff Point State Park, making it a bird watchers paradise. Other outdoor activities Groton campers can enjoy at the park include hiking, mountain biking, and fishing. Getting Outdoors

When packing your motorhome, throw in a good pair of hiking boots as you’ll be hiking a lot when camping at Bluff Point State Park. The Bluff Point State Park and Coastal Reserve Trail is a wonderful 3.6 miles long loop trail that is best used from April through October. The trail offers incredible views of wildflowers and the ocean. Dogs are allowed, but they should be kept on a leash at all times. The trail is also good for running but be aware of rocks and roots.

Groton is just as good for mountain biking, so put some air in your tires and refill your hydration park. The area features a couple of shorter biking trails such as the Bluff Bridge trail and the Haley Farm Southern double track in the adjacent Haley Farm State Park. At about 3.5 miles in length, Bluff Point Trail is the most popular double track in the area. It is doable from both sides, and there’s a nice secluded beach along the way.

Bushy Point Beach is a long tombolo facing Groton Airport. The beach is a great vantage point as you’re able to spot planes flying in and out of the airports as well as the coastline and Fishers Island. There’s a boat launch at Bluff Point, which is mostly used by kayakers. Additionally, there is a ramp used for car-top boating. Some of the fish anglers can catch include sea trout, striped bass, and bluefish.

Camping at Bluff Point State Park

RV camping at Bluff Point State Park won’t be possible as the park has no RV Park, but there are a couple of campgrounds to choose from around Groton. The Seaport RV Resort is located just a few minutes away in Old Mystic. The park features pull-thru sites that are equipped with electric and water hookups. Guests are also treated to WiFi and cable TV. Additional amenities include showers, a camp store, and a pet area. There is a dump station for waste management.

Alternatively, consider the Mystic KOA in North Stonington. As with most KOA campgrounds, the campground offers full hookups. Don’t worry about the length of your travel trailer as the RV Park can accommodate even the longest trailers. The park offers lots of amenities, including laundry facilities, propane, and a picnic shelter. For recreation, there are outdoor courts, horseshoes, and a pool.

Exploring the Area

Before your time in Groton is over, how about visiting even more attractions in the area? Groton is home to the Groton Monument, one of the oldest obelisks in the United States. Constructed between 1826 and 1830, the 135 feet tall marble monument is dedicated to the defenders who fell in the Battle of Groton Heights.

Whether you’re a fan of naval history or not, the Submarine Force Library and Museum is a must-visit. The museum is the only submarine museum managed by the navy. It holds thousands of artifacts, the most impressive one being USS Nautilus, which was the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world. Other exhibits include submarine periscopes, a submarine control room, and an early research submarine.

Should you still have some time, point your campervan towards New Haven for a chance to explore the Yale University Art Gallery. Did you know that this is the oldest university art museum in the western hemisphere? The museum houses a significant amount of art from notable artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Pablo Picasso.
