Lake Gaston is located in northeastern North Carolina, near the Virginia border and directly north of the cities of Rocky Mount and Wilson. The lake was created in 1963 with the damming and impoundment of the Roanoke River. Lake Gaston’s main purpose was to supply hydroelectric power to the local county, but has recently taken on a more recreational role. Its state border location means that both campers from North Carolina and Virginia can bring their RV rental here, and enjoy the fantastic recreation. Driving your rental RV down Highway 903 will take you directly to the shores of Lake Gaston, and both Interstate 85 to the west and Interstate 95 to the east provide links to the rest of the state.

Getting Outdoors
Renowned for its excellent fishing, Lake Gaston draws angling campers in from miles around, and it is easy to see why. Many fishing tournaments, both amateur and professional, are held on Lake Gaston every year. The lake is best known to anglers for its bass fish and these bass fish come in a range of verities. Largemouth bass, black bass, striped bass, and hybrid bass, are most sought after in the lake. Alongside the bass, there also abundant numbers of bluegill, crappie, catfish, walleye, and white perch. Lake Gaston campers have a plethora of species to catch on Lake Gaston, a fact that will keep competitive anglers returning year on out.
Camping at Lake Gaston
Those camping with an RV at Lake Gaston are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking an RV campground along the shoreline. Many campsites can be found on both the North Carolina and Virginia sides of the lake. ‘Interstate Inn Campground’ on the eastern shore of Lake Gaston is the ideal place to set up camp. Partial hookups are provided here, including 20, 30, 50 amp electric and water hookups. Facilities include a dump station, flushing toilets, shower block, swimming pool, and free WiFi. Pets are more than welcome on-site but must be kept on a leash at all times.
Exploring the Area
The nearby city of Rocky Mount is the ideal place to explore once you have had your fill of lakeside fun. The historic ‘Stonewall Manor’ is a must-see when in the city of Rocky Mount. The manor was built around 1830 by planter Bennett Bunn and was the site of a huge plantation before the American Civil War. Visitors can take a guided tour of the manor and grounds, learning all about its history and the wider history of eastern North Carolina in the process. Stonewall Manor has long been on the National Register of Historic Places and is a must-visit for any history fan.

David and Nicki are fantastic hosts. The camper was extremely well equipped with every need thought of. From the pick up to the drop off they were professional, responsive, and flexible hosts. The camper came with everything needed for a wonderful week at the NC State Fairgrounds; dishes, linens, towels, games, and even a specific coffee setup. 10/10 would rent from them again!
