Pine Creek Gorge is a spectacular, 800-foot-deep canyon known as "the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania." Found in the state's central north, this eye-catching natural attraction is also home to a memorable RV camping destination — Colton Point State Park.
Located near Wellsboro, this 368-acre park sits on the gorge's western rim. It offers beautiful scenery, rustic charm, great fishing, and gorgeous fall foliage. And with a peaceful campground where you can immerse yourself in the relaxing natural surrounds, it's a great spot to stay for a while in a rental RV.
One of the main attractions that draws visitors to Colton Point State Park is the chance to do a little sightseeing. With wonderful views of the 4,000-foot-wide canyon, including views of Leonard Harrison State Park on the other side, it's the sort of place where you just have to sit back and admire the beauty of nature.
With that done, you might want to head out and explore one of the local hiking trails. There are four miles of trails in the park, and walking them is the best way to enjoy spectacular vistas of the canyon and the surrounding area. However, because you have rugged terrain and steep cliffs to contend with, make sure you exercise caution.
For an easy and spectacular hike, check out the one-mile Rim Trail. It leads to several overlook areas along the rim of the canyon, so you'll want to snap off a few photos along the way. For those lucky enough to be visiting during fall, especially in October, the trees here also put on a spectacular display of fall foliage. The vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges are striking, to say the least, and you'll want to spend a while just taking it all in.
If you're feeling like more of a challenge, the Turkey Path three-mile round trip could be just what you need. This difficult and challenging trek leads you all the way down to the floor of the canyon, passing a magnificent 70-foot waterfall along the way. It's a rewarding hike, but one only suited to people who are physically fit.
If you're a keen angler, you'll be happy to make the hike down to the bottom of the canyon just so you can wet a line in Pine Creek. Panfish, smallmouth bass, and trout can all be caught in the creek, while there are also several other trout streams nearby. It's not what you'd call an easily accessible fishing destination, but it does offer seclusion and wonderful natural beauty. Just make sure that you comply with all Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations and laws if you plan on fishing in the park.
If you want to go RV camping at Colton Point State Park, rent an RV in Tioga County and then find a site in the park's pretty and peaceful campground.
Open from mid-April until late October, this charming little campground is perfect for travelers seeking a tranquil escape. Colton Point State Park campers will want to note that hookups aren't available here. Additionally, you won't be able to reserve your site in advance. All sites are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The campground features water, rustic bathroom facilities (vault toilets), picnic tables, and fire rings. An RV dump station is also provided for added convenience.
There are 25 sites in total, and pets are permitted in the campground. However, you'll need to remember to keep your dog on a leash when outside your camper and clean up after them whenever necessary.
When your Colton Point State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end and it's time to hit the road again, you don't have to head home straight away. Instead, why not steer your motorhome towards some of the other great attractions nearby?
If you're a keen cyclist, you might want to head to Wellsboro to check out the Pine Creek Rail Trail. If you'd rather explore another one of Pennsylvania's excellent state parks, head over the other side of the canyon to check out Leonard Harrison State Park. There, you'll find yet more unspoiled natural beauty and great hiking.
And if you'd prefer to head somewhere a little more populated, Scranton is less than three hours to the southeast. While you're there, make sure you take some time to check out the Steamtown National Historic Site.
There's stacks to explore and enjoy when you rent a camper near Colton Point State Park, so make sure you allow enough time to experience it all.
