Uniontown KOA

Camp in an RV near Uniontown and make the short drive east to Laurel Hill State Park, which sprawls across 3,935 acres around a human-made lake. It offers plenty of recreational pursuits throughout the year, including hiking and fishing in the warmer months and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing if you’re visiting in the winter. Stretch your legs on the Hemlock Trail that winds beneath an old-growth forest or fish for trout, perch, and bass in Laurel Hill Lake. Aside from its various picnic areas where you can relax over lunch, there’s also a children’s playground and a small beach where you can swim. Also nearby is the Roaring Run Natural Area, which extends across 3,500 acres on the slopes of Laurel Ridge. This scenic woodland reserve is traversed by numerous hiking trails that cross a series of streams fed by springs at the summit of Laurel Ridge. Follow the remains of an old logging railroad on the North Loop trail or walk along the banks of the Roaring Run along the 3.3-mile-long Roaring Run Trail. Camping at Uniontown KOA is also a good base for visiting Ohiopyle State Park, which centers around the 14-mile-long Youghiogheny River Gorge. It boasts some of the best whitewater rafting in the eastern United States, as well as plenty of picturesque waterfalls that can be accessed along short hiking trails. Visit the Ferncliff Peninsula National Natural Landmark or hike and bike along the Youghiogheny River Trail. Then you can join one of the local whitewater rafting outfitters to tackle the seven-mile run known as the Lower Yough that extends from Ohiopyle Falls to the Bruner Run take-out. Ohiopyle State Park lies adjacent to the Bear Run Nature Reserve, which protects a tributary of the Youghiogheny River. Aside from various hiking trails through the Appalachian forests, the reserve is also home to the Fallingwater house that was designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It was constructed partly over a waterfall on the Mill Run section of Bear Run and was celebrated as Wright’s “most beautiful job” by Time magazine upon its completion in the late 1930s.
