Cooper is a city in and the county seat of Delta County. It was established at roughly the same time as Delta County, in 1870, and has been an agricultural and shipping center for most of its history. The city grew rapidly since its creation, especially after the arrival of a railway line, and continued to do so into the early 20th century. In 1926, however, the town's economy was devastated by the loss of a cotton crop, and the railroad and other businesses were forced to close. The town suffered a large population drop, and although it began to recover in the 1930s, it never recovered fully. Cotton continued to be an important crop into the 1970s when it was replaced as the main crop by wheat. Today Cooper still relies on wheat and agriculture, in general, to keep its economy going.
