This divine rural settlement was established in 1881 and is named for the honorable Judge Thomas Jefferson Devine of San Antonio. The city primarily relied upon growing corn, cotton, and other small vegetables for its early years, until oil and natural gas were discovered nearby.

Devine is surrounded by epic desert landscapes and beautiful wilderness, but you won't find much in town as far as parks are concerned. Devine City Park is a public green space in town for people to convene and enjoy the great outdoors. The park has a series of park benches, picnic tables, playscapes, and a large open grassy space for people to throw a frisbee or walk their dogs.

Devine may be a bit small for people hoping to see big city attractions, but there are a few notable exceptions. The historic downtown section in the center of town is full of old western style buildings reminiscent of a spaghetti western film. The old Adams Company Lumber Yard building is one example of elegant brickwork that the area is known for. The Stroud Blacksmith Shop and the Bigfoot Wallace Museum are also some of the oldest buildings in town worth seeing. The Shooting Star Museum is a unique institution that features some old antique vehicles like planes, trucks, and automobiles.
