John (Jot) Gunter, a rancher who owned several thousand acres in northern Texas, had an idea in the late 19th century: build a town and make money off the land. He parceled around 300 acres and platted it. The first inhabitant, Albert Earthman, built a home in 1903. He later would charter the First National Bank. With the bank along with a post office, which opened shortly after, the town slowly grew.

During these encounters, visitors can feed and pet the ambassador animals and also learn about caring for these animals and about the environment they originally came from. The facility is open to the public only on weekends. Heads up: there is a small parking fee.
