Getting Outdoors

Visitors to this state park will find quite a few outdoor activities to do while here. One activity to consider doing is hiking. The park is filled with over 12 miles of trails, such as the Pine Trail, Coyote Run, and Gold Dust Trail. Many of these trails will take you through thick hardwood forests and most feature observation deck areas. In addition to these, this park also has a few bridle trails you could go horseback riding on. Keep in mind though that horses need to have a negative Coggins report in order to enter.

You could also go and explore the James River. The park has a boat ramp guests can use to go boating or fishing. If you do decide to fish, you’ll need to have a license on hand to do so. You could also rent some canoes and kayaks. Swimming is not allowed in the park due to the unpredictable rapids and strong currents.

Powhatan State Park is also great for geocaching. By using a GPS, you can connect it to the park’s geocaching system to search for their hidden caches. To find them, they will give you clues about the park’s landscape and history which you’ll have to figure out. Once you find the caches, adventurers can sign the logbooks inside them. Some caches will also surprise you with gifts.
