As you'd expect based on the park's name, much of the activity in Lake Anna State Park centers on the lake itself. The pretty lake is a popular attraction all year round, but especially during the summer months when swimmers flock to the area.

From Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day, guarded beach swimming is available at Lake Anna's scenic, sandy beach. It's the perfect way to cool off at the height of summer, but please note that a fee applies if you want to swim in the gated area. It can also get quite busy on the hottest days of the year, so don't expect to have the beach all to yourself.

If you'd prefer to be on rather than in the water, Lake Anna is also an excellent fishing spot. Bream, crappie, largemouth bass, and several other freshwater species can be caught in its waters, and a public boat launching ramp is provided.

If you don't have a boat, there are plenty of spots where you can fish from the bank. Or, you might like to let your kids cast a line in the two-acre fishing pond located near the park's visitors' center.

The other main way to spend your time in Lake Anna State Park is to take a hike. Eleven trails wind their way through the park, providing some 15 miles of hiking to enjoy. The one-mile Fisherman's Trail offers an easy stroll for any angler looking for a good fishing spot, while those looking for something more strenuous might like to tackle the three-mile Gold Hill Trail.

Speaking of gold, the Lake Anna area was once the site of a prosperous gold mine, following the discovery of the precious metal there in the 1800s. Today, you can trace the history of gold mining in the region at the visitors' center, while guided tours of the Goodwin Gold Mine are also available.

If you want to camp in Lake Anna State Park, search for an RV in Spotsylvania County and then find yourself a site in the park's campground. There are 46 sites to choose from, including:

Half of the sites in the Lake Anna State Park campground can be reserved in advance, while the remaining sites are first-come, first-served. If you're keen to get a campfire going, you can purchase firewood from the park office.

If you're traveling with friends or family who don't have an RV rental, they might want to spend the night in the other accommodation options available in the park. These include cabins, camping lodges, and yurts.

When you're ready to call time on your Lake Anna State Park RV camping adventure, you don't have to head home straight away. In fact, you'll find plenty of other great destinations within easy reach of this wonderful state park.

Alternatively, you might like to head to a major center, in which case Richmond is around an hour's drive away. While you're there, be sure to tour the excellent Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and take a stroll around the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
