As the name suggests, the popular Virginia State Park of High Bridge Trail State Park is made up of a long trail. Once an old rail bed, the trail is full of history, and many people come to rent an RV in Cumberland County and take a pleasant walk back through time. The centerpiece of the park is the towering bridge that sits 125 feet above the Appomattox River. It is filled to the brim with outdoor opportunities for the whole family, and certainly should not be missed on a trip to one of the neighboring towns of Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Blackstone.

High Bridge Trail State Park is currently one of the newest additions to the Virginia State Park System, yet the trail itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a Virginia Historic Landmark and is the location of two civil war battles.

Getting Outdoors

The High Bridge Trail itself is 31-miles long, taking you through the town of Farmville. Three and a half miles of the trail runs through the town, and this part is only open for non-motorized activities such as hiking and cycling. It is a wonderful walk, offering views of Central Virginia, with farmland stretching out before you. Although all of the High Bridge Trail is scenic, the crown is the majestic high bridge itself, the longest pedestrian bridge in the state, and offering some incredible views. The trial and the bridge are often the main reason that people choose to get a Farmville camper rental.

If you don't fancy walking, the trail is also great on a bike. Most riders start at the Farmville's Main Plaza and ride the 4.5 miles from the parking lot over the bridge. It is a lovely place to ride with mostly flat, paved, and wide paths with lovely views along the way. Because of the easy terrain, this trail is also a popular place for horseback riding.

Lots of visitors combine their walk or cycle with a spot of lunch when motorhome camping in the area. Picnic tables are scattered along the trail in scenic spaces. The river is a cooling place to dip your feet in after a long walk. If you are interested in the history of the bridge and park, there are regular guided tours to the base of the brick pillars that hold up the bridge. From down below, you won't be able to believe quite how big it is. The bridge has significant civil war history, so you'll likely learn more about this while on your tour.

Paradise Lake Family Campground offers a good place to park up your RV rental for the night when you plan on visiting High Bridge Trail State Park. The campground is open all year round. However, the amenities are slightly more limited during the winter months and offer something for everyone.

Other sites come with full hook-ups with the option of 20, 30, 50 amp service, or you could go for a waterfront big rig site. There are also swimming pools, a camping supplies store, a snack bar, clubhouse, planned activities, and lots more.

Exploring the Area

Animal lovers will love a visit to the Bright Eyes Alpaca Retreat, a unique attraction centered around these fluffy creatures. As the name suggests, it really is a retreat for alpacas, and you can arrange tours to learn about the alpacas, their protectors, and the working of the farm itself. Depending on what time of year you are RV camping at state parks, you may even be able to see some baby alpacas grazing in the fields.

This museum strives to tell the stories of the civil war through multiple different perspectives, offering a range of exhibits and displays. Another interesting museum to visit while in the area is the Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum, displaying the history of Hampton-Sydney College.

Take a stroll down the main street of Farmville to visit a plethora of shops, bars, and places to grab a bite to eat. The town is a lovely place to have a walk and explore, popping in to grab a coffee or glass of wine as you go. A favorite haunt is the Virginia Tasting Cellar which features multiple Virginia wineries, breweries and cideries all in one spot, with an ever-changing line-up of things for you to try. All tastings are uniquely curated to your tastes and preferences, so you are sure to find a drink you love.
