Located in Wisconsin, Yellow Lake was formed by a mile-high glacier as it scraped and gouged its way north around 10,000 years ago. Over the subsequent centuries, several different Native America tribes moved into and left the area around the lake. The most recent was the Chippewa Native Americans. Many Chippewa people still reside in the area. Local lore has it that infamous Al Capone built a bridge between Big Yellow Lake and Little Yellow Lake to use as an escape route.

Yellow Lake is sometimes referred to as Big Yellow to make the distinction between it and the nearby lake, Little Yellow Lake, clearer. Both lakes are yellowish in hue, likely due to the natural tannins in the water from a river that connects both lakes.

To replenish supplies or grab any forgotten items, Webster, WI, has a couple of grocery stores and a few stores. For more variety in shopping and restaurants, visitors may need to hop into an RV rental and head across the Wisconsin-Minnesota border to Pine City, MN, which is about 30 miles west. Alternatively, Spooner, WI, which is about 35 miles east, has a Walmart store and a medical center. Start planning your ideal vacation and search for an RV in Burnett County, WI.

Getting Outdoors

Every fisherman like to boast about their favorite fishing hole. It has the best fish, they’ll say. Or it has the best weather conditions, the best conditions for a healthy population, or the best scenery. The fishermen who favor Yellow Lake can back their claims up. In 1979, a local teen hauled out a record-setting lake sturgeon, which weighed 179 pounds 10 ounces and was 79 inches long. Needless to say, that’s an impressive catch. In addition to lake sturgeon, anglers can expect to catch muskellunge, panfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and catfish. Though the water clarity is low due to the tannins from the upriver, it is quite clean.

Yellow Lake encompasses 2,283 acres, and there’s plenty of room for fun recreational activities on the water. Racing, jet-skiing, and water skiing are popular activities as is swimming. Three public boat ramps make launching boats a simple matter.

The Gandy Dancer State Trail, which passes by Yellow Lake, is a 98-mile corridor laid over old railroad tracks. Starting in St. Croix Falls, WI, Yellow Lake meanders through thick woods, passes by meadows and open farmlands, and over low-lying hills. The trail crosses into Minnesota and back into Wisconsin, terminating just south of Superior, WI.
