The aptly named Interstate State Park straddles the Wisconsin-Minnesota state line, encompassing more than 1,600 acres on either side of the St. Croix River. Considering the park's diverse landscape and wildlife, it’s no wonder that campers from Saint Croix Falls, Taylors Falls, and beyond all frequent the park. Whether you want to climb the cliffs, hike across glacial potholes and old lava flows, conquer the rushing rapids, or simply explore the woods and thickets brimming with oak, maple, and pine, the park has you covered.

This is the first interstate park in America. In the mid-19th century, as the mining industry encroached on the area, government officials in both states worked to protect the land. Thanks to these efforts, one of the most beautiful state parks in the area was created, with a rich ecosystem that supports white-tailed deer, foxes, otters, beavers, and over 70 different bird species.

The park is perfectly secluded to provide the tranquil atmosphere you'd expect from a state park and still close to more populated areas with shopping and dining facilities. The park also boasts well-equipped RV campgrounds, making it an excellent destination for RV camping. Don't have your own rig? Search for an RV in Chisago County or find an RV rental in Polk County.

Getting Outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the park because of its hiking trails, rock climbing areas, placid waters, and rapids. Whether you'd like to test your mettle on a rock climbing excursion or float down the St. Croix River, Interstate State Park campers have a variety of ways to explore the park.

Four miles of hiking trails rated moderate to difficult meander throughout the park. If you're a geology buff, then you might want to hop onto the Glacial Potholes Trail. As its name suggests, this is a half-mile loop that will have you traverse glacial potholes. Looking for a real challenge? Pack your rock climbing gear in the camper rental and grab a rock climbing permit from the park office or the visitors' center.

Prefer to explore the calm waters of the St. Croix River? You'll find a rental shop on-site where you can get the necessary equipment and even a guide for this aquatic adventure. The river is also an ideal spot for fishing. You can expect to catch smallmouth bass, catfish, sturgeon, whitebass, and walleye.

Camping at Interstate State Park

Interstate State Park RV campground is open from early April to late October. There are over 30 sites where you can set up camp in an RV, and more than half of those sites have 30 amp electric hookups. The primitive sites offer beautiful views of the river. The maximum length for motorhomes is 45 feet.

Interstate State Park campers will have access to all the standard amenities, such as toilets, showers, a dump station, and firewood. Guests are also allowed to bring their pets along for their Interstate State Park camping trip. Just be sure to keep your buddy on a leash.

Exploring the Area

Gas stations, shops, and restaurants are all within easy reach. Both Saint Croix Falls and Taylors Falls are packed with restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. You can find pizza, seafood, comfort food, fast food, grill burgers, vegan options, and so much more just a short drive from the park.

When you're ready to see what else this area has to offer, you'll find a variety of attractions nearby. History buffs will want to stop by Folsom House in Taylors Falls. This 19th-century home belonged to the famous lumber magnate W.H.C. Folsom and his descendants. Five generations of the Folsom family lived here, and the entire estate is incredibly preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society.

Art enthusiasts will find a few interesting galleries in Lindstrom, located within 15 minutes of the park. Pick up a quirky painting for your home at Night Art Gallery, or browse a selection of hand-crafted Scandinavian furniture and figurines at Gustaf's Up North Gallery. Lindstrom is also home to a few antique stores and a popular golf course. Fishing aficionados might also want to check out the lakes in Lindstrom and the surrounding area to see what they can catch.

On the other side of the river in the state of Wisconsin, there's a lovely wildlife educational park located in St. Croix Falls called Fawn-doe-rosa. The place is a must if you're traveling with your kids, as the park's hands-on encounters with wildlife are sure to be a treat. Grab a souvenir from the gift shop to commemorate your day out.
