Planning to do some RV camping in Wyoming? The wide-open expanses and scenic mountain ranges bring a calming atmosphere to the camping getaway you deserve. Nearly midway between Casper and Cheyenne, Wyoming, just outside of Douglas, you’ll find the beautiful Glendo State Park. Connected to the Glendo Reservoir, this park is built for water activities and other types of outdoor fun.

The area used to be home to the Arapaho and Cheyenne natives during the 18th century, and evidence of their culture can still be found in artifacts throughout the park. Modern remodeling began with the Glendo Dam, which was built in 1958 and stored water for the state, supplied fuel to the powerplant, and created the giant reservoir. The park was created shortly after.

With activities like sailing, hiking, archery, and discovering wildlife, Glendo State Park is a wonder to behold. The relaxing ambiance and opportunity for adventure make it a great destination for just about anyone. Book an RV in Platte County today and get your vacation started.

Discover Glendo State Park

Getting Outdoors

The biggest draw to Glendo State Park is definitely the expansive reservoir. The Glendo Reservoir provides year-round fishing and is widely known as the best walleye fishing in the state. Fishing at Glendo State Park gives you the chance to catch perch, bass, catfish, and crappie, to name a few species. Angling is said to be superb just about anywhere in the park.

If you plan to do some boating at Glendo State Park, you’ll have around 12,000 surface acres on which to do it. Both motorized and non-motorized boaters are permitted on the waters. Note that, due to fluctuating tides, boaters will explore the lake at their own risk.

Glendo State Park also has a 3D archery range for its visitors to use. There are two courses that archers can use to practice their shooting. Crossbows, firearms, pets, and alcohol are prohibited on the course.

Hikers have over 45 miles of trails to explore. Motorized vehicles are prohibited, which provides the hikers with an added level of safety and allows the natural habitat to remain relatively undisturbed.

Camping at Glendo State Park

Due to the sheer size of the park, Glendo State Park campers won’t be surprised to find there are around 568 campsites to choose from, many of which have standard water and electrical hookups of 30 and 50 amps. There's also a dump station where motorhome rentals can dispose of their waste safely. Many different campgrounds within the park provide a variety of amenities and camping styles. Some let you rest among large pine trees while others take you to a nice white sandy beach.

Both back-in and pull-through sites are available depending on the campground. Pets and group camping are allowed nearly everywhere, and vault restrooms can be found in specific locations. Glendo State Park doesn’t offer Wi-Fi; however, most major cell phone carriers have decent service in the area.

Exploring the Area

An hour’s drive north of the park will land you in Casper, Wyoming. Casper rests in the North Platte River Valley, under the watchful eye of Casper Mountain. Discover this cultural oasis located in the sprawling wide-open West. Outdoor activities include miles and miles of hiking, nature walks, and wildlife viewing. But there are also a number of museums and theatres to keep you busy as well. Visit a brewery, distillery, or stop by a local festival or fair if the season permits. Common events include bullfighting, rodeos, and live music shows.

Take a trip south to the state capital, Cheyenne. The possibilities for fun are endless here. When you arrive in Cheyenne, you’ll feel the welcoming, artsy, vibe as you pass by arts exhibits, live music, and pottery barns. In addition to the arts scene, there are also different types of tours you can take around the city, including the Wild West Tours and the Boot Tours. Learn all about the history of the Wild West, gunslingers, cowboys, and ranches at any of the many events or museums that the city offers.

If you’re looking for a town that's a little less busy but still full of beauty, head east to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Chimney Rock and the Scottsbluff National Monument are two towering natural landmarks that set a gorgeous backdrop for the town. There are a couple of museums to check out, including the Legacy of the Plains Museum and the Agate Fossil Beds National Museum. Finish off the day trip with some Chinese takeaway, pizza, or a steak dinner.

You'll find a good selection of gas stations around Glendo State Park at which to fill up your camper rental before you hit the road. The Glenmore Marina has a restaurant on-site, but if that isn’t what you’re looking for, there are plenty more Mexican, Italian, and American restaurants within a short drive. The park is located very near I-25, which can take you south towards two major cities: Cheyenne and Denver.
