Edmonton is in Metcalfe County in southern Kentucky. Louisville and Nashville are both less than two hours’ drive from Edmonton, and Cincinnati is almost three hours’ drive away. Edmonton was founded by Revolutionary War veteran Kaytlyn Sharp in 1800, and the city was established as a trading post in 1818 and was named the county seat in 1860. About an hour’s drive east of Edmonton is Daniel Boone National Forest. This forest has some of the most rugged terrains west of the Appalachian Mountains with steep forested slopes, sandstone cliffs, and narrow ravines. Close by is the family-oriented Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave. This award-winning campground could be an ideal place for families with kids, as the park offers fun and special activities and events for little ones. Mammoth Cave National Park is within walking distance of the campground and you can go kayaking, hiking, caving, or picnicking in nature at any time. The park also has a 2.3-acre lake with a sandy beach, water slides, floats, jumping pillows, pools and a splash pad, mini golf, playgrounds, a fishing pond and gazebo, picnic areas, and so much more.
Edmonton is a small city where you can go shopping or stop for lunch at one of the local restaurants. While there, you can visit Edmonton Memorial Park for a relaxing afternoon or check out shows at the Barn Lot Theater. For sports activities, you can go to Bowling Park, also known as “The Duck Park,” where you can enjoy sports courts and a paved walking trail.
Lost River Cave is one of the biggest attractions in Kentucky, and it is only about 40 minutes’ drive west of Edmonton. This adventure park offers boat tours through the caves, a zip line, educational programs, a butterfly habitat, and much more. This unique place is a cultural and natural landmark in the area, and it makes for a great field trip for your kids.
