While Bugg Island Lake is one of the main attractions, there is plenty more to look forward to when you come camping at Staunton River State Park. If you enjoy hiking and the woods, the park has six wooded trails that are perfect for miles of hiking along the Dan and Staunton Rivers, and by the lake as well. Along with hiking trails, you will find multi-use trails that are open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Boating is also very popular here, and there is a boat launch ramp available. However, do keep in mind that boating depends on the water levels and may be restricted if the levels are too high or too low. In case you don’t have your own boat, there are rental options outside of the park, but none within. Both motorized and non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake, and there are good stretches for canoeing too. There are a few Class II and Class III rapids for a bit of adventure, and long stretches of calm, flat water for an easy-going trip down the river. And where there is boating, fishing cant be very far behind. Both Bugg Island Lake and the Dan and Staunton Rivers are abound in a variety of fish including bass, bluegill, crappie, and perch. A valid fishing license is required to fish at any of these water bodies. Don’t forget to pack your fishing gear into your rental RV. If you enjoy a cool swim on a hot summer day, make use of the Olympic-sized pool and a wading pool within the park, and in use from Memorial Day to Labor Day only.
