Perched on the southern shores of Little Seneca Lake, Boyds is a historic community on the outskirts of Germantown. It was named after the Scottish immigrant, Colonel James Alexander Boyd, who established dairy farms and built a temporary village here for construction workers along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

While Boyds has remained largely rural throughout its history, recent years have seen residential communities mushrooming in the surrounding farmland and forest. It’s still an idyllic spot to rent an RV for those wanting a quiet escape while exploring the sights of Montgomery County.

Discover Boyds

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Boyds and make the short drive north to the Black Hill Regional Park, which overlooks the northern shores of Little Seneca Lake. It’s home to the Black Hill Visitor Center where the local ecology is showcased through exhibitions and kid-friendly displays. You can join one of their guided nature programs to immerse yourself in the scenic surrounds or stroll through the native plant gardens and meadows to discover the region’s indigenous species.

If you want to stretch your legs, book a camper rental in Boyds and embark on the Hoyles Mill Trail that travels south from the Black Hill Regional Park through the Boyds Local Park to the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park. Extending for 6.3 miles, it then continues through the South Germantown Recreation Park, which is home to an adventure playground, mini-golf facilities, and a splash park, before finishing at Schaeffer Farms. Aside from being accessible to hikers and cyclists, the trail is also open to horseback riders.

Another option is to embark on the 7.8-mile-long Seneca Creek Greenway Trail, which extends through the Great Seneca Stream Valley Park. It winds through picturesque woodlands and past the former sites of the Middlebrook Mills and the Watkins Mill while following the banks of the Seneca Creek. The park also shares its border with the North Germantown Greenway Stream Valley Park and the Ridge Road Recreational Park where you can take advantage of the basketball courts, in-line hockey rink, and dog park.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Boyds and head to the Ramblin’ Pines Campground in the town of Woodbine. This sprawling campground nestles in a wooded setting with around 200 RV sites, not to mention a dog park, swimming pool, exercise room, and jumping pillow.

Closer to Boyds is the Little Bennett Campground in nearby Clarksburg that has its own camping store in case you’ve forgotten any essentials. It’s an ideal RV destination for kids, with a jumping pillow, pedal kart track, and basketball court, as well as an outdoor laser tag course.

Alternatively, drive northwest to the Brunswick Family Campground, which lies on a secluded stretch of land between the Potomac River and the C & O Canal National Historical Park. There are around 50 RV sites with either 30 or 50-amp electric service and water hookups, as well as a playground, picnic tables, volleyball and basketball courts.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Boyds and spend a day exploring the sights of neighboring Germantown. Browse the visual art exhibitions at the BlackRock Center for the Arts or check to see if any performances are scheduled during your visit, then shop for fresh, seasonal produce at the Lancaster County Dutch Market. You can pick your own blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries at a nearby orchard or let loose on the zip lines and rope ladders at the local adventure park.

Alternatively, head to Gaithersburg and its Community Museum, which is housed at a beautifully restored B & O Railroad Station. Admire the caboose and 1918 steam locomotive on display in the rolling stock rail yard and discover the town’s railroad history in the Freight House. Then make a point of visiting Gaithersburg’s Arts Barn, which is situated within an old stable and features a gallery space where the works of local and regional artists are exhibited.

Boyds is also just a short drive from Clarksburg where you can pick up discounted designer brands at the Clarksburg Premium Outlets. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can grab a bite to eat in the Market Hall dining pavilion.

Boyds is home to a small grocery store where you can stock up on basic supplies, or you can make the 10-minute drive into Germantown where there are larger supermarkets and plenty of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. You’ll also find gas stations here.

Whether you’re visiting Montgomery County for its hiking trails or outlet stores, book an RV in Boyds and start exploring.
