Young George Washington, who was a lowly lieutenant at the time, surveyed the valley east of South Mountain and declared it the most beautiful place he had ever seen. The earliest settlers, who were German and English immigrants, arrived in the area in the 1730s. One of the original settlers, Michael Jesserong, purchased several acres and named it Middletown. He sold plots to other settlers who came along in 1767, and that’s considered the official founding date of the town.

Many homes and buildings were built in the mid-1800, and are still standing today. These buildings are a mix of Victorian-era styles, including Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, and Colonial Revival, and several are on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is well known for a persistent urban lore: a local monster called Snallygaster, a chimera bird/dragon creature with one eye in the center of its forehead, often will abduct livestock and naughty children in the middle of the night. This creature was used in a satirical piece about Senator Joseph McCarthy, the politician notorious for fueling fears about Communism.

Situated smack dab in between Frederick and South Mountain, book an RV in Middletown, MD, and it will make it easy to find an adventure of a lifetime.

Discover Middletown

The Great Outdoors

Several state parks overlay the South Mountain ridge, following its straight-as-an-arrow path from Virginia to Pennsylvania. Altogether, the parks cover several thousand acres of forestland. The Appalachian Trail (AT), popular with section- and thru-hikers follows the top of the mountain range for its entire length. Between the AT and the tertiary trails, there are hundreds of miles of multi-use trails. The parks virtually teem with wildlife. Herds of white-tailed deer bounds through the woods and foxes and wolves gambol in the groves. Shy black bears will venture out into the open in search of delectable berries and fruits. Outdoorsmen, nature lovers, and landscape photographers will delight in this wilderness, which is virtually untouched by mankind.

Just to the north, Gambrill State Park is a modest 3,000-acre park with 16 miles of hiking trails. The mountaintop, nicknamed the Knob, offers breathtaking views of Frederick to the southeast, and the valley to the west. Bring your RV rental and go explore! With a caveat: this park has a very small campground, and only a few sites have hookups. Reserve well in advance.

RV Parks

One advantage to renting an RV in central Maryland is the bounty of RV-friendly campgrounds, making it easy to find someplace to park overnight. In addition to the nearby state parks, many of which have hookups for RVs, there are a handful of private facilities in the area.

Treehouse Camp at Maple Tree Campground, near Brownsville, is nestled up against the South Mountain. The grounds is within spitting distance of the Appalachian Trail and several other hiking trails. A wide range of amenities include full hookups, private showers, and bathrooms, and it’s also dog-friendly.

Exploring the City

A luxury RV rental will be at home an elite place like the nearby golf courses. Maryland, which is well known for its love of golf, has several private and public fairways, even out in the boonies. The Richland Golf Club, which is open to the public, features over 6,000 yards, with some of the longest tees in the state. The par-72 course was designed by premier architect Rick Jacobsen.

Hop into an RV rental and vroom over to Crystal Grotto Caverns, a few miles west of Myersville, which has one of the most crystal and rock formations per square foot in the country. Preserved exactly as it was at the time of discovery in 1920, the original rock formations are still intact. There are thousands of intricate stalagmites, stalactites, soda straws, helictites, and calcite crystals. Tours are conducted daily.

History buffs, take note. Frederick is steeped in history. Original homes and buildings look as they did when they were first built. There are dozens of museums in the town. One notable example is the Schifferstadt home, now an architectural museum, which is a charming German-Colonial farmhouse built in 1756. One of the oldest homes in the area, it features two-foot-thick walls, radiant heating (a rarity at the time), and narrow, steep staircases. Visitors are guided through the home as they detail the life of the families who resided there.

The climate in this part of the state is quite suitable for growing grapes and fruit orchards. Several farmers have converted their lands, and there are a handful in the area. The award-winning Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery specializes in honey wines, and also produces white and red wines in limited edition batches. The boutique winery has a mead-and wine-tasting room that looks out on several acres of grapevines and beehives. Friendly dogs are welcome to visit!
