Getting Outdoors

In the summer, 43-acre Hunting Creek Lake is one of the best places in Maryland to cool off. Claim a patch of sand at three postcard-perfect beaches, all patrolled by lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day. RV camping at Cunningham Falls State Park is a great way to beat the summer crowds and ensure you hit the beach before the park reaches capacity.

No trip to the park is complete without visiting Cunningham Falls, Maryland's longest cascading waterfall. It flows for more than 78 feet along a rocky ravine and can be easily accessed via the half-mile Lower Trail. For a glimpse of the park's industrial past, hike the Catoctin Furnace Trail to the ruins of a historic iron forge.

If native wildlife is on your wish list, Cunningham Falls delivers with a healthy population of black bears, as well as reptiles, birds and other Catoctin Mountain species. The Cunningham Falls Aviary offers a unique chance to get up close with owls, hawks, eagles, and other feathered residents. Pick up a Maryland Freshwater Sport Fishing License and you can cast a line for trout, bass, bluegills, sunfish, crappie, and catfish.

Camping at Cunningham Falls State Park

RV camping at Cunningham Falls State Park offers a unique chance to live and breathe the natural beauty of Maryland. The park operates two campsites: one in the William Houck Area and the other in the Manor Area. If you want to be close to the falls, the William Houck campground is a good option. It's popular with families and offers more than 100 sites, some with electric hookups for RV rentals. The Manor Area Campground offers an intimate atmosphere and plenty of privacy. Choose from around 20 sites, half with electric hookups suitable for motorhome camping.

All sites feature picnic tables and fire rings, so be sure to plan for campfires, singalongs, and s'more roasting sessions. You'll also enjoy access to bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. Reservations are recommended when camping at Cunningham Falls, as the park is always popular in the summer, especially from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Pets are allowed in the Addison Run and Bear Branch Loops of the William Houck Campground, as well as all sites in the Manor Area. Be sure to clear up all leftover food as Maryland is black bear country. Chat to one of the friendly park rangers or camp hosts if you're unsure on the protocol.

Thurmont, a laid-back mountain town three miles from the park, is a great place to stock up on gas and groceries. Browse independent shops strung along the historic Main Street, stroll along the pedestrianized Thurmont Trolley Trail, and check out the colorful murals. Treasure hunters can work their way through more than 200 antique stores in Downtown Fredericktown, as well as hidden gems in towns like Emmitsburg, Middletown, and New Market.

Baltimore is a one-hour drive southeast and is a popular hub for picking up RV rentals near Cunningham Falls State Park.
