Just a short drive northwest of town is the South Mountain State Park near Myersville. This expansive state park, at roughly 40 miles long along the South Mountain Ridge, covers two Maryland counties. While the park may be a little tricky to find since it doesn’t have any obvious markers, keep in mind that South Mountain is really only able to be explored by foot. However, South Mountain is home to some of the region's best and more challenging hiking trails. Those who are a little more daring can even try some of the low-key climbing outcrops around the park. If you’re looking for an easy day trip to take with the New Market RV rental, a relatively easy drive to the southwest of New Market is the T. Howard Duckett Watershed in Clarksville. At T. Howard Duckett, visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the lake as they explore the various walking paths and trails that wind their way along the lakeshore. Not only that, but you can also explore from the waterside by either kayaking and canoeing thanks to multiple boat launches around the shore. If you’d rather just take in the sights and sounds and enjoy your peaceful break in nature, you can indulge in the park’s take-a-book/leave-a-book program and pick out a good read and relax. Michaux State Forest is another easy day trip destination, located across the Maryland-Pennsylvania border near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The park is nestled among the foothills of the northern reaches of the South Mountain range. Visitors can enjoy almost 100 miles of hiking through the foothills, mountains, and meadows, including 37 miles of the famed Appalachian Trail. You won’t have to be hiking for long before you can fully appreciate the true biodiversity in the region, thanks to the nutrient-rich ancient volcanic deposits in the area. If you’d rather enjoy a little bit more of a relaxing day in the forest, you can set yourself up along one of the many creek or ponds and indulge in some cold water fishing. And if you enjoy the meditative sport of golf, you can play the South Mountain Golf Course, nestled within the park.
