This small town is named for a nearby rock formation that was formed by the Potomac River. It lies on the banks of the river, in the southwestern corner of this uniquely-shaped state. The river forms the border with Virginia, which lies just to the south. The nearest larger town is Frederick, at less than 14 miles to the north. This area is fairly rural, though the megalopolis that is made up by the Washington D.C. and Baltimore metro areas is located around 50 miles to the south and east.
