Discover Buchanan

Although the town of Buchanan can be found in southern Michigan, it is considered a suburb of South Bend, Indiana near the state line. This fantastic little town was named for the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan, and is commonly called the “Redbud City” for its many gorgeous redbud trees. Buchanan was platted in 1842 and later incorporated in 1858. Although once the headquarters for a few major companies, the area has since diversified and relied on locally owned businesses to power the economy since some of the factories vacated the area.

The splendid scenery in and around Buchanan is among one of its best features, with lots of botanical gardens and nature preserves exemplifying these qualities. The shores of Lake Michigan are not very far so when you book an RV in Buchanan, you have the freedom to tailor your vacation to what you want to see and do. Kalamazoo and Chicago are only about an hour’s drive away so the possibilities are endless when you rent an RV in Buchanan.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Although Buchanan is known for its spectacular redbud trees, it doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of outdoor spaces or public parks to utilize when you rent an RV there. Kathryn Park is one of the parks in town and has some basic park features like a playground and walking paths. McCoy Pond Park has lovely walking trails adorned with many types of flowering trees that soothe those that walk between them.

Warren Dunes State Park can be found by driving west in your Buchanan motorhome rental to the Lake Michigan coast. This popular Michigan state park brings in visitors each year to enjoy the picturesque beaches and swim in the refreshing waters of Lake Michigan. The park is named for its massive sand dunes which tower over the water’s edge, and there is a lot to do at Warren Dunes like stargaze, camp, fish, hunt, hike, and even cross-country ski in wintertime.

Grand Mere State Park is another fabulous lakefront park you can enjoy with your Buchanan camper rental, located just 10 miles north of Warren Dunes. Grand Mere conveniently sits alongside Interstate 94 and has towering dunes of its own which can be scaled to gain scenic views of the water.

Potato Creek State Park is south of South Bend, Indiana. The park is full of restored wetlands and mature forests teeming with migratory birds and other wildlife. Mountain biking, hiking, hunting, fishing, and camping are possible at this Indiana state park.

Van Buren State Park and Saugatuck Dunes State Park are far to the north along the shores of Lake Michigan and some of the other countless beachfront parks that you can find when exploring the are in your Buchanan motorhome rental. If you don’t mind driving several hours to the north, Huron-Manistee National Forest is a great place to spend the summer months near Grand Rapids. Over a million acres of serene forest and protected coastal dunes make up this outdoor paradise in Northern Michigan, where camping is a pleasure.

City Attractions

Buchanan is largely devoid of any major attractions to call its own, but the town is still a lovely place to grab a bite to eat or sample some wine at one of the many wineries in town. The nearby city of Niles is home to the Fort St. Joseph Museum where lots of local history is on display. The area is historically significant with regards to the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, as well as the indigenous people that lived around Southern Michigan hundreds of years before the arrival of European settlers.

South Bend, Indiana, has some great attractions to check out if you have the time, like The History Museum that is housed in an elegant, old Victorian mansion. The house is full of original furniture from the past, and fun exhibits that chronicle the history of South Bend. The museum is also connected to the Studebaker National Museum which displays all sorts of vehicles created by the Studebaker company like tractors, trucks, tanks, and automobiles. The Potawatomi Zoo is the oldest in the state and has over 500 animals contained on site.

Where to Park It

Southwestern Michigan is no stranger to campers or those using a recreational vehicle, so naturally, there are quite a few places to stay overnight when you book a motorhome rental in Buchanan.

Bear Cave RV Campground might sound dangerous but rest assured it is just a name. The campground has a game room, boat ramp, sports fields, and a pool. Fuller’s Resort & Campground has quite a few amenities. This cozy resort area is wooded and has a shady beach on the shores of a spring fed lake. Weko Beach Campground can be found along the shores of Lake Michigan and is home to some amazing sunsets over the water. Kamp Across from the Dunes is across the street from Warren Dunes State Park which can also be used for RV camping, and both are a brief walk from the glorious beaches beside the dunes.
