During the summer months is, of course, the best time to enjoy Bear Head Lake State Park camping, and the typical camping season this far north in Minnesota stretches from early May until mid-October. You can camp at any time of the year at Bear Head Lake State Park, but when staying over in the winter, be sure to prepare accordingly. There is a large campground at the park that can be used for both RVs and tents, and both types of camping share the same communal structures. These communal structures include a dumping station, hot showers, flushing toilets, and a few large picnic shelters. RVs campers at this park will enjoy electricity at all RV sites, but only in 50 amps so be sure to bring a converter when you have an RV rental that requires 30 amps. Most of the campsites at this park are fairly secluded and have a lot of trees that function as both wind and sound barriers. The RV parks in this site are all back-in spots, as there are no pull through sites available.

To the north of the state park, toward Ely, you can enjoy two amazing opportunities to interact with wildlife. Both the North American Bear Center and the International Wolf Center are in this area, and both have fantastic programs to educate the public on these wild animals. While here, learn through interactive exhibits and artifacts, and watch trained professionals interact directly with the animals in a controlled setting. Also in Ely, you will find one of the largest collection of restaurants and gas stations in the area. This town is a great pitstop when you are heading further north, as there is a decent diverse collection of restaurants that should make everyone in the family happy. Restaurants include high-end steak houses, family-style Italian, brewpubs, coffee shops, diners, fast food, and even a gourmet takes on American classics. Additionally, this town is home to some gas stations, many of which have been designed to accommodate large vehicles like RVs, that make filling your tank easy even for inexperienced RV drivers. Camping at Bear Head Lake State Park is a great way to gain unbridled access to one of northern Minnesota’s biggest attractions, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This area, less formally known as the BWCAW, contains over 1,500 miles of canoe routes that traverse more than 1,000 lakes. Over 200,000 people visit this amazing part of the state annually, but even with this large number of visitors, it is still possible to canoe for days on end while encountering only a handful of other outdoor adventurists.
