Discover Cass Lake

Cass Lake is one of Minnesota's national treasures, full of local history, natural beauty and an abundance of recreational activities. The lake is a popular vacation spot as there are a number of camping spots and resorts dotted around the shoreline, and is great for boating, fishing and relaxing. Cass Lake is located in both the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and the Chippewa National Forest. Surrounding towns include the town of Cass Lake, Pennington, Bemidji, and Walker, all of which have their own unique charm and encourage folks to search for an RV rental in Cass County.

Cass Lake is glacier formed and around 10 miles long, with over 25 miles of shoreline, much of which is forest and sandy beaches. The lake is the largest of the eight lakes that collectively make up the Cass Lake Chain of Lake. The height of the water is controlled by two dams on the Mississippi River. One of the most fascinating points of the lake is Star Island, named for its shape, which has its own lake on it, the only lake within an island within a lake in the northern hemisphere.

Getting Outdoors

Cass Lake has a great reputation for year-round fishing. Anglers come from miles around to try their luck on the water, with many people catching walleye that are over 10 pounds, along with muskie over 40 pounds. There is also a range of other species that include northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, and even the elusive burbot. There are a number of steep drop-offs and sunken islands that help to make the lake a fisherman's dream, drawing then to rent a camper near Cass Lake.

Fishing is by no means the only draw to Cass Lake, especially when the weather is warm. Visitors can enjoy relaxing in the Norway Beach Recreation Area and exploring the surrounding Chippewa National Forest. There is a huge sandy beach that can be enjoyed by all who visit, whether it is purely for sunbathing or for a dip in the water. There is also a number of picnic areas and hiking trails, allowing the surrounding area to be enjoyed further. In the winter, cross country skiing is the activity of choice, and there is a great 50-mile Heartland Snowmobile trail to enjoy that runs from Park Rapids to Cass Lake.

There are a number of places around Cass Lake where you are able to hire boats if you don't have one or don't want to bring it with you when you go camping at Cass Lake. Fishing boats, pontoon boats, canoes, and kayaks are all available and are a great way to explore some of the less accessible areas of the shore. Cass Lake has a number of islands that are great for paddling round, such as the larger Star Island, which has around 8 miles of shoreline and 6 miles of hiking trails.

Camping at Cass Lake

One option for camping at Cass Lake is at Stony Point Resort and Campground. There is a full-service RV park here that has a number of amenities for the use of campers, such as campfire rings, picnic tables, and a sandy beach. There are a nice lounge and restaurant on-site if you don't fancy cooking yourself as well as a pool, gift shop, and boat launch. Hire a boat directly from the resort, let the kids run free on the children's playground, make use of the picnic area, and much more. This is a great place to camp near Cass Lake when you are looking for a family-friendly campground that's full of activities and amenities.

Another option is to stay at Cass Lake Campground itself, it is part of the Norway Beach Recreation area, and is a bit more primitive when compared to Stony Point Resort, so it depends what you're looking for when camping with an RV. It is located right on the waters of Cass Lake so you can wake up to some stunning views in the morning. The campground offers a number of interpretive trails, boat ramps, and a reservable picnic shelter, all of which are surrounded by beautiful red and white pines.

Exploring the Area

For a truly unique attraction in the area, pay a visit to Shenanigans Family Fun and Old Time Photos. Have a relaxed game of mini-golf, or if you don't mind getting a little wet, you can take part in a game of Water Wars, using water balloons. One of the best activities at Shenanigans is the old-time photos where you and your friends and family have the opportunity to dress in a range of historical costumes, choose a backdrop, and have a photo taken. Dig for fossils and other hidden treasures in the Fossil Dig and then bring what you find into the shop to have it made into jewelry.

For something a little more geared towards the adults, the Forestedge Winery is a wonderful place to visit. The winery offers its visitors a peaceful setting nestled in the woods, with the nearby farm providing all the rhubarb to make their award-winning rhubarb wine. Take a wander around the well-maintained gardens or just sit on the cobblestone patio with a nice glass of wine. Visitors are also welcome to visit the on-site galley, filled with art and fine crafts made by local artists before heading back to their RV rental.

Of course, camping at Cass Lake wouldn't be complete without a visit to Cass County Museum. This is the place to head to learn more about the area and its history. Although small, there is a lot of history packed into the building, which is housed in an old train depot. There are many railroad, logging, and other items from Cass Lake history, as well as some Native American items. There are also a few replica log buildings which will be of interest to many.
