This park sits in the far north of the state of Nebraska. It lies at the point where the wide, Missouri River, meets the smaller Niobrara River. These waterways offer numerous opportunities to enjoy recreational activities. This is a very rural part of the country. The small town of Niobrara sits just outside the parks borders, while Valentine, NE is around 150 miles to the west. The South Dakota state line is the river, and the nearest larger town is Sioux City, Iowa, at over 130 miles to the east.

The park is comprised largely of grassland that covers the rugged bluffs that line the banks of the rivers. Numerous activities are available here, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, picnicking, and of course water sports. Fishing, swimming, boating, and even tubing are available on the nearby waterways.

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV here, at the park, will give you the chance to enjoy the wide variety of recreational activities it offers. Buffalo cookouts are available during the summer months. These include "cowboy poets" who relate the tales of the cowboys who first helped to settle the area. This is a very popular activity, so reservations are required through the park office, which can also provide information on the event.

Numerous hiking trails are available throughout the park. Some of them form circular loops. These trails tend to be tamer than many found in other parks, as they meander through the nearby grassland and across sand dunes as they skirt the banks of the nearby rivers. These offer prime opportunities to observe the wildlife that is native to this untamed land, though be prepared for little shade to be available during the heat of the warm months.

This park is known for the water tubing offered on the Niobrara River. While it's big sister, the Missouri, is large and faster flowing, the Niobrara provides a slow, calm ride that allows visitors the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and escape the summer heat. Canoe and kayak trips are also offered through local vendors.

Camping at Niobrara State Park

This park makes camping with an RV a breeze. Several campgrounds are found throughout the park, and an overnight stay here will help you to fully enjoy all the sites the area has to offer.

Both primitive campgrounds and those that offers some hookups are available on-site. The primitive sites are available on a first-come, first served basis, and may not be able to accommodate all sizes of RV's. Reservations are encouraged for the modern sites.

The modern campground offers visitors access to a swimming pool when the weather is warm, as well as WiFi access. Potable water, bathrooms with flush toilets, and shower facilities are also available. A playground is offered for the children as well. As so many unique adventures are made accessible by this site, many people enjoy RV camping at Niobrara State Park; therefore amenities shouldn't be hard to find.

Exploring the Area

When you book an RV in Knox County, you can find activities that people of all ages will think are interesting. Several unique attractions are located nearby. The Niobrara River Bridge, a triple-span, metal, railroad bridge, crosses the river and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is also the Kreycik Elk & Buffalo Tours to enjoy. These assist visitors in viewing the large game animals that are common to this part of the country. State park RV camping will also give you the chance to explore around the nearby region.

The J. Alan Cramer Interpretive Site is available at the park. This attraction highlights the history of this locale, the surrounding area, and the animals that call this region home. This includes the culture of the Ponca tribe that first tamed this wild land. Observation areas are also available that provide picturesque views of the scenic park, as well as the rivers that border it.

Maiden's Leap is a historic site located less than five miles from the park. It sits on chalk bluffs that overlook the river. The tragic story behind this site is of a young woman from one of the local American Indian tribes. She was said to be in love with a warrior, though she was betrothed to another man. The story goes that she rode one of her father's best horses off the cliff to avoid marrying the man she was intended for.

If you've been seeking a quiet location, relax and appreciate Nebraska's wild side, consider camping at Niobrara State Park. Go for a hike, tube down a river, and enjoy the stories of cowboys from bygone days. Camp in an RV near Niobrara, and explore the ruggedness of the Cornhusker State.
