Newton Hills State Park is located in southeastern South Dakota, covers over 1,063 acres, and was named after settler William Newton. Before English settlers arrived, the land was inhabited by the Woodland Indian Culture. Many archaeological artifacts from this time period have been discovered at the park and can still be seen today in their natural setting.

The state park features a staggering elevation providing plenty of panoramic views. It’s also located near Interstate 29, making it easy to access with your motorhome. With its beautiful outdoor landscapes, the park is also home to various legends which claim that buried gold is hidden somewhere in it and that Jesse James once used the park as a hideout.

Getting Outdoors

When visiting Newton Hills State Park, you will discover a variety of outdoor activities. One of note is birdwatching. The park is a favorite destination for many species, such as woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and green herons. Many birdwatchers claim that the best place to view these magnificent creatures is at Sergeant Creek, especially in May when various migrations are occurring.

Take a hike while at Newton Hills State Park. Thanks to its location within a thick hardwood forest, the park offers plenty of trails with scenic views. This includes the Blue Diamond Multi-Use Trail (which can also be used for biking and horseback riding), Woodland Trail, and Augie Ridge Trail which winds around Sergeant Creek. Most of these trails are well maintained and marked and are somewhat easy to trek down.

During the winter, Newton Hills State Park is a popular place for cross-country skiing. The park features over five miles of trails designed specifically for this sport. Some of the trails have steep grades, and others will be paved. There are maps available for those who want to see where the trails lead.

Camping at Newton Hills State Park

When looking for a place to park for the night during your adventure, book an RV in Lincoln County at Newton Hills State Park. The park has over 118 sites, some of which offer 30 and 50 amp options. Other amenities include a dump station, cell service, showers, and flush toilets. However, keep in mind that from late October to April, showers and flush toilets are not available. Despite this, there are still vault toilets one can use if you intend to visit during this time period.

This motorhome campground is open year-round and is a pet-friendly option. It also has a playground. Reservations are recommended to help ensure you get a site, and these can be made by calling the park or booking online.

Exploring the Area

You’ll find plenty of places to venture to with your RV if you’d like to explore the surrounding area. In Sioux Falls, there’s the Butterfly House and Aquarium. This attraction is designed to help guests learn more about the life of butterflies and various marine animals. Guests can explore a butterfly house filled with these colorful insects floating around. The attached aquarium features tanks with tropical fish. There’s also a stingray touch pool where you’ll be able to interact with these gentle marine animals. Tickets are needed in order to enter.

Another place of interest to drive to with your camper is the Heartland Country Corn Maze. Located in Harrisburg, this massive corn maze covers over 11 acres and features a new design visitors can hunt through each year. There are small checkpoints located throughout the maze where you’ll be able to earn unique prizes. The maze also offers a night tour occasionally where you’ll be able to try to find your way out of the maze while gazing up at the stars. Keep in mind this maze is only open in the summer and fall.

Head over to Mitchell with their travel trailer to see the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village. This archaeological museum is filled with exhibits that highlight the history behind the different Native American tribes that once lived in the state. You’ll be able to walk through old homes to see what life was like for them. In addition to this, you’ll be able to view interesting archaeological artifacts found during excavations, like arrowheads. There’s also a small garden nearby filled with a handful of native plants.

There are about three gas stations located near Newton Hills State Park, all of which are located a short distance away. When it comes time to eat, you’ll also find a few eateries which serve comfort food, pizza, and vegan options. Many of these restaurants also sell local favorites, like frybread and bierocks.
