It also allows you to wake up early and get outdoors to explore the hiking trails blazed throughout Blue Mounds State Park. Over 13 miles of hiking trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. The main trail will lead hikers over the top of the mounds. An additional three miles of paved trail welcomes cyclists and leads into the town of Luverne.

RV camping at Blue Mounds State Park is the only way to camp when visiting in the winter months. You'll enjoy some exciting winter activities once the snow starts falling. Snowmobiling is a favorite pastime, with over 20 miles of snowmobile trails in and around the park. Three of those miles are located within the park. The hiking trails offer excellent winter hiking where you can easily see the wildlife without the spring and summer foliage blocking your sight lines.

One of the main draws to Blue Mounds State Park is the abundance of wildlife that calls the park home. If you're lucky, you may see deer, coyotes, nesting grosbeaks, and bison. The bison herd that inhabits the park is relatively small, and the best time to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures is during the early morning hours. Camping with an RV in the park is a good idea if you want to see the bison. Blue Mounds State Park also offers guided tours of the bison habitats.

Camping at Blue Mounds State Park

State park RV campgrounds generally fill up quickly during the busy months. Be sure to reserve your campsite well in advance to ensure you have a spot. Blue Mounds State Park features over 70 shaded campsites, 40 of which come complete with electric hookups. Restroom facilities are located within walking distance of most campsites. The maximum RV length is 50 feet. Three campground loops are located near the wildlife viewing pond and are ideal for visitors seeking an up-close encounter with the park's flora and fauna.

If state park RV camping is a little too rustic for you, you may want to check out Pipestone Campgrounds, located only 30 minutes north of Blue Mounds State Park. This campground is open May through September and offers weekly, monthly, and seasonal rates. Amenities include full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and a dump station.

The Adrian Municipal Campground is under 30 minutes from Blue Mounds State Park and is one of the largest RV parks in southwestern Minnesota. This campground can accommodate any size RV and has 20, 30, and 50-amp hookups. Wi-Fi and cable TV are included for all campers. Hot showers and modern toilets are within walking distance of each campsite, and laundry facilities are also available.

Exploring the Area

While visiting Blue Mounds State Park, you're a mere 45-minute drive from Sioux Falls, SD, and the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History. This 45-acre zoo is a must-see for bear lovers. The “Fortress of the Bears” exhibit offers interactive learning for the entire family. The museum has over 150 mounted displays including more than 30 threatened and endangered species.

After visiting the zoo and museum, head over to the Butterfly House and Aquarium in Sioux Falls. This is a saltwater aquarium, one of only a handful in the United States. The Butterfly House is open year-round and allows visitors a chance to learn more about butterflies and the metamorphosis they undergo.

Drive into Luverne when RV camping at Blue Mounds State Park and visit the Hinkly House Museum. The Hinkly House was built by R.B. Hinkly in 1892 and is constructed from Sioux Quartzite, one of the oldest types of stone in the United States. The museum is open June through August. The leaded stained glass windows throughout are masterpieces and imported from England. Hinkly House boasts a tunnel from the basement to the backyard and was the first house in Luverne to have a telephone installed.
