Fort Mott was formerly a part of the Harbor Defenses of Delaware in the 1800s. Today, visitors can explore the old batteries by following the interpretive signs that detail the history of the fort. The Delaware River flows just beyond the fort and has a majestic shoreline excellent for picnicking and photos. Make time to tour the award-winning winery in Pilesgrove. This vineyard has over 19 acres of grapes that are cultivated to produce a variety of red and white wines. Guests can tour the vineyard and then settle into the tasting room to learn about the wine-making process and sample some of the wines created on-site. The tour generally lasts about an hour and a half. History buffs will want to travel to Pennsville and visit the Finns Point National Cemetery. This United States National Cemetery is situated at the north end of the Fort Mott Military Reservation, adjacent to Fort Mott State Park. The cemetery is surrounded by Killchohook National Wildlife Refuge. The site served as the burial place for about 2,500 Confederate prisoners of war who died during their imprisonment at Fort Delaware. The Union Monument still stands tall in the Finns Point National Cemetery. It was installed in 1879 to remember the 135 Union guards that died while on duty at Fort Delaware and were buried at the cemetery. In 1910, the United States government commissioned the Confederate Monument to memorialize the soldiers of the Confederate Army buried there.
