A tribe of Lenape Native Americans, known as Navesink, resided in the area that would later become Sayreville. Records show that the first known encounter with this group, who lived by the Raritan Bay, was in 1609. An English sea captain-nee-explorer, Henry Hudson, and his crew went ashore to replenish their supplies and were attacked by the Navesink. One of the men, John Colman, is said to have been the first European killed by a Native American, and Coleman’s Point was named for him.

One of the most notable families in Sayreville are the Morgans. They have lived in the area for well over 200 years, and it’s rumored that they are descendants of the infamous Captain Morgan (the very same one depicted on Captain Morgan Rum).

The small community was known as a few different names over the years, and finally “Sayreville” stuck. The town’s inhabitants chose the name in honor of a prominent resident, James R. Sayre Jr, who founded a major company: Sayre and Fisher Brick Company. As the name suggests, the company produced bricks using local clay deposits. Later, they found a large number of fossils and ambers, many of which now reside in museums around the world.

The Great Outdoors

New Jersey is notorious for humid summers and swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Renting an RV in Sayreville will allow you to enjoy the outdoors without having to endure endless buzzing or leaky tents. One of the closest parks, Cheesequake State Park, is a modest 1,600-acre park with diverse ecosystems. Explore the open meadows, saltwater and freshwater marshes, cedar swamp, the Pine Barrens, and a small grove of hardwood forest. Fishing in the marshes is allowed. Species vary depending on the salinity in a particular area of the marsh; anglers can catch trout, largemouth bass, catfish, and a few others. Bring your Sayreville camper rental and have a great time with the family! Heads up, though: although RV and trailer camping is allowed, space is limited, and there’s an 11-foot height restriction.

Much of the coastline along Sayreville lies on high bluffs and cliffs. To access the beach, head over to Ideal Beach (also known as Bayshore Waterfront), which is on the outskirts of Keansburg. This public beach has plenty to offer adventurers. Explore the miles of coastline, salt marshes, tidal creeks, and dunes. Hikers and beachgoers can enjoy the city skyline across the water on a clear day. Fish from the shore or from the marina. Be aware that all saltwater anglers must register with the NJ Saltwater Angler Registry (no fee!).

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Sayreville, NJ, don’t forget to figure out where to park overnight. Due to the urban density and policies in place, there are very few options in the immediate area around the town. In addition to Cheesequake State Park, Allaire State Park near Farmingdale, also allows RV/trailer camping. Like Cheesequake, there are no hookups, though there are dump stations, showers, and restroom facilities. Space at both parks are limited; reserve online well in advance.

To maximize the use of a Sayreville luxury motorhome rental, search for a private campground that includes full hookups. Pine Cone Resort in Freehold, may tick off several boxes. In addition to full hookups for your RV, it also has a large swimming pool, fire rings at each site, and an outdoor sports/play area. WiFi, of course, is included.

Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson may be a good alternative. A few minutes from Six Flags Great Adventure, this campground has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a fishing pond, and fun activities that’ll entertain children and adults alike.

Exploring the City

A Sayreville RV rental makes it easy to explore this part of New Jersey and to find the perfect activity. Dive into the local nightlife and hit the local favorite, the Starland Ballroom. It’s a concert venue at which many well-known entertainers have performed. A short list of notable names includes Van Halen’s lead singer, David Lee Roth, Bon Jovi’s Wild Ones, and Richie Sambora.

Zip over to New Brunswick, where there’s even more to do. An exquisite collection of art from all over the world hangs at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, ranging from historical oil paintings to modern abstract sculptures. On the same campus, the Rutgers Geology Museum showcases ancient fossils, a looming mastodon’s skeleton, and meteorites that drifted through space long before this solar system was formed. Skip the New York theater crowds. The George Street Playhouse performs Broadway and off-broadway acts and has seized several awards for their performances.

The high octane, buzzing New York City is so close that grabbing an RV rental in Sayreville makes sense. But it can be tough to deal with the infamous traffic in an unfamiliar vehicle. Instead, hop into the NJ Transit and zip into the Penn Station. From there, join the droves and use the subway or taxi to get around the city.

Book an RV rental in Sayreville and head on out to find your adventure of a lifetime!
