Discover Lake Tappan RV rentals for memorable road trips

Lake Tappan was created in 1967 when the construction of the Tappan Dam was completed. As the water rose, filling the reservoir, it flooded a Civil Air Patrol airstrip as well as homes in the hollow bowl. Today, the lake encompasses around 1,255 acres, stretching across the New York-New Jersey border. It supplies water to the surrounding towns and also functions as a fishing hole. As of 2003, it was designated a Category 1 water purity source, which means there is no swimming or boating in this lake. However, fishing from the banks is permitted.

Getting Outdoors

In the heart of suburbia, it can be tough to find a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Lake Tappan may be the perfect solution. Gaze out on the serene water and listen to the calls and cries of local birds as they search for bugs, small fish, and other prey. Walkout on the fishing dock, which is wheelchair-accessible, and cast a fly into the pristine water. A healthy population of bluegill, smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch, carp, and catfish swim in the clear water. High overhead, red-tailed hawks soar on thermals, waiting for easy prey. Along the banks, in the rushes and the trees, other birds and waterfowl explore the grounds. The banks are havens that ornithologists will enjoy observing. Bring a checklist. Among many birds, birdwatchers can expect to find tufted titmouse, mute swan and the pied-billed grebe. Bald eagles are sighted on occasion, though they nest elsewhere.

Camping at Lake Tappan

This close to New York City, there are not many camping options and very few RV parks due to regulations governing the suburban neighborhoods. Head out of town for wilderness RV camping options. Harriman State Park RV campground, Beaver Pond Campground just outside Pomona, NY, has hookups for RV camping, although its other campgrounds allow primitive camping. With over 137 sites to choose from, campers can elect to park in deep woods for a sense of isolation or share an open space area with other campers.

Exploring the Area

In the heart of the New Jersey-New York suburbs, there’s plenty of places to see and activities in the area. Navigating with a rental motorhome may be a challenge, particularly in the older neighborhoods where streets are narrow or congested. However, there are plenty of alternative transport options to ease that headache. The bus or train mass transit whisk visitors to dazzling New York City, where there are endless memories to be made. Shop, browse, and learn to your heart’s delight in Manhattan. Prowl the halls of Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim Museum where some of the world’s finest artists’ work hang. Step back into time where strange beasts with razor-sharp teeth once roamed Earth at the American Museum of Natural History. Listen to rich, vibrant music waft out of Metropolitan Opera House.

The trip went great, the host was very easy to contact and was extremely quick with his responses. We had some engine trouble getting back but overall we would book this RV again! He thanked us for letting him know about the issue and would get it serviced.
