Camping at Ramapo Mountain State Forest

While camping at Ramapo Mountain State Forest is not permitted, visitors could find a place to stay that is close by. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is one of them. This quiet and secluded campground is perfect for anyone longing to escape the city noise for a couple of days. There are 29 sites within the campground, and each has an electric and water hookup. The sites have an asphalt surface, and most of them are spacious. However, be mindful that a couple of sites are slightly smaller than the others.

Other amenities include a large bathhouse and a picnic area. The campground is pet-friendly, but there are a couple of rules campers need to follow. Your pet shouldn’t be unattended while at a campground, and you need to keep it on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Since there is no store within the campground, visitors are advised to get all of their supplies before arriving here. Reservations are not necessary, especially offseason. However, should you plan on visiting Ramapo Mountain State Forest in the summer, make sure you contact the office first.

Exploring the Area

Visitors who go motorhome camping in the northern part of New Jersey shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see Clifton. Even though the city seems small, there are lots of landmarks here that will keep you busy for the entire afternoon. The Hamilton House is one of them. This living museum is housed in a renovated Dutch farmhouse. Rooms are decorated with period furniture, representing three different styles-Federal, Victorian, and Early American. As visitors move through the farmhouse, they get to see how people lived centuries ago. The museum is filled with interesting information about New Jersey and Clifton as well. The guided tour will provide visitors with even more fascinating facts.

Clifton Arts Center and Sculpture Park are a bit off the beaten path, but worth a visit if you appreciate fine art. Located in a stunning building, the arts center is set on promoting the local creatives who often showcase their work here. Don’t forget to visit the garden because there you might see exquisite sculptures and relax on a bench. Additionally, the Sculpture Park is a part of the Clifton Municipal Complex that is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Downtown Clifton is the perfect mix of old and new. There you might have a cup of coffee at a cafe and enjoy the weather. Or you may grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants. Clifton has a great selection of local and international diners. Italian restaurants are popular among the locals, so if you and your camping buddies are craving pizza, order it before hitting the road.

Don’t forget to get some fuel for your rental RV before you leave the city should you not be ready to go home just yet. Head southwest to Edison, a city famous for Menlo Park where Thomas Edison’s made some of his biggest discoveries.
