As a large New Jersey State Park at 4,444 acres, Ringwood State Park will not disappoint when it comes to things to do. With a botanical garden and manor houses to explore, as well as a large lake and hiking trails, all with views of the surrounding mountains, it is clear to see why so many people rent an RV in Passaic County.

Ringwood State Park is located in the heart of the Ramapo Mountains yet still easily reachable from the nearby towns of Mahwah, NJ, and West Milford, NJ, and even the city of New York City, NY, for those looking for a little country air. Both Skylands and Ringwood Manor are in the park, offering a wealth of history and are an incredible place to explore.

Getting Outdoors

The park is home to a beautiful Botanical Garden that is worth a look no matter the time of year you go camping at Ringwood State Park. The gardens cover 96 acres, so there is plenty of exploring to do and contains a huge variety of plants, shrubs, evergreens, and more. The landscaping is beautiful and includes terraced gardens, woodland paths, a crabapple vista, and various annual gardens. The stunning backdrop of the Ramapo Mountains makes this a lovely place to visit.

Shepherd Lake, located within the park, is a hub of recreational activity. Covering 74 acres, there is plenty of room for everyone who goes to Ringwood State Park camping to enjoy it. The lake is used for fishing, boating, and swimming when the weather is warm enough. You could choose to either bring your own boat, which should be electric motors only or choose to rent one from the park. Spending a day on the water is a lovely way to spend the afternoon, whether you are hoping for a catch me simply want to explore the shores from a different perspective.

A network of trails surrounds the lake, offering a different way to explore the area if you have a rental motorhome at Ringwood State Park. Most are mainly used for hiking, but some are also multi-use, and it is not uncommon to see those on horseback or mountain bike. The 7.5-mile mountain bike loop is particularly well used. As the park is also open in the winter months when snow covers the landscape, the trails can then be used for cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

Camping at Ringwood State Park

There is also a large pool that will help keep you cool during the summer months, an arcade, bike rental, a dog park, climbing rock wall, laundry facilities, and lots more. Another good option to camp in an RV near New York is Beaver Pond Campground. This campground is located on the shores of a lake, making it a peaceful and scenic place to kick back for a few nights. Each site comes with a picnic table and a fire ring, with comfort stations, showers, and laundry facilities all centrally located. There is also a protected swimming beach and a dump station on site.

Exploring the Area

Sports fans should not miss out on a trip to the MET Stadium, an incredible experience that is easily accessible from the park. No matter if it is football season or not, you'll be able to get a tour of the stadium, home to both the New York Jets and the New York Giants. In the tour, you'll visit some of the premium facilities within, such as the Press Box and Luxury Suites, learning more about the history of the stadium and the teams that play there. Take a look at the calendar of events before you visit as it also regularly hosts concerts and other events.

A great family day out is to Bergen County Zoo. The zoo offers exposure to a diverse range of wildlife, both big and small, and is a great way to earn more about some of the incredible creatures that live there. In the summer, there are daily live animal shows held in the on-site amphitheater, and for a fun way to get around, there is a small land train that will get you to all the main sites and enclosures.

When traveling with kids, a good stop off is the Jersey Explorer Children’s Museum. Children are sure to have a lot of fun exploring the different areas inside. The Tomb of the Ancient King is a two-level Egyptian tomb where visitors must solve clues and try their hand at hieroglyphics. Children can also take a walk down Main Street, visit the Theater and go stargazing, making it a great rainy-day activity.
