Getting Outdoors

When planning your Storm King State Park camping excursion, be sure to throw some high-quality hiking boots as you’ll be spending lots of time in the trails. Most of the hiking trails in the park are short, so newbies won’t have a problem. The longest trail in the park is the 4 miles long Stillman Trail.

Perhaps the best thing about the Hudson is that no license is required to fish in the river from Manhattan to the Hudson River Lock and Dam in Troy. The Hudson River hosts a wide variety of migratory fish, so keep a keen eye on the calendar to pounce on striped bass or the Atlantic sturgeon as they swim towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The convenient location of Storm King State Park makes it great for boating fanatics keen on having a taste of the Hudson. When camping at Storm King State Park from May through October, guided kayaking tours are available in Cornwall. Surprise your better half with a paddling excursion to the Bannerman Island Castle on a romantic tandem kayak.

Camping at Storm King State Park

When you have made up your mind about renting an RV for a getaway at Storm King State Park and proximity to the state park is important, look up the campground at Round Pond Recreation Area, a military famcamp situated within walking distance to Storm King State Park. The campground’s back-in sites are served with electric and water hookups. For waste management, Cornwall campers get access to a dump station. Additional amenities include a camp store, a clubhouse, and propane is available.

Should you be willing to sacrifice proximity for full hookups, then consider the New York City North / Newburgh KOA in Plattekill. Like most KOA campgrounds, full hookups for your travel trailer come as standard. Campers are treated to WiFi and cable TV, not to mention good network coverage for all major carriers. Some of the amenities include a pet area, laundry facilities, and a snack bar. To keep active, campers get access to a pool, outdoor courts, and a mini-golf course.

Getting Outdoors

Tour the surrounding attractions before packing up your campervan and leaving the Cornwell area. Start your tour in Middletown, which got its name for the fact that it sits halfway between the Hudson and Delaware rivers. Take a walk down memory lane by pulling up to the Fair Oaks Drive-in Theater for a Friday night movie. The impressive two-screen drive-in cinema has a capacity of about 800 cars.

If dirt track racing has always fascinated you, how about getting behind the wheel of some race cars at the Kenny Wallace Dirt Racing Experience. Many people consider Bugatti’s and Koenigsegg’s as the fastest cars in the world, well, wait until you drive the 1200 lb sprint cars, which push northwards of 370 horsepower. If that sounds a little bit extreme, try the IMCA- UMP style Modifieds, which give less experienced drivers more room for error.

After experiencing what a race car feels like, show up at the Orange County Fair Speedway to witness some serious racing action. Built-in 1897 for horse racing, it is one of the oldest continuously operating racing surfaces in the world. Should hunger come calling, Middletown has a diverse collection of eateries ranging from kid-friendly restaurants to fine dining establishments.
