Thinking of renting an RV in southeastern Pennsylvania, but hate the crowds and traffic that come with the city? Choosing to book an RV in Morgantown might be the solution; the tiny settlement is only an hour’s drive from bustling Philadelphia and just over half an hour’s drive from Lancaster, the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Getting from Morgantown to anywhere else in southeastern Pennsylvania is easy as both Interstate 76 and 176 run right next to town.
Morgantown is a fairly small community that straddles the lines between rural Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the state’s former industrial region on the outskirts of Philadelphia. One of the most prominent reminders of this history is the Joanna Furnace, an 18th-century ironworks and blast furnace. Not too much is left of it, but you can imagine the work carried out by rugged men of the time: shoveling coal, pouring molten metal, and building the equipment that revolutionized early America.
Spending time in nature is one of the best parts of renting an RV and there’s no shortage of great places to do it near Morgantown. To do a little golfing, hit up the golf course in nearby Birdsboro. Spending the afternoon of 18 holes here will wash away any pre-vacation stress you might have.
French Creek State Park is one of the most popular outdoor hangouts due to its vast network of trails and access to Hopewell Lake. There’s even a swimming pool if going for a dip in the lake isn’t your thing. Marsh Creek State Park is about 10 miles away and also has excellent hiking opportunities, a public pool, and boat rentals.
Aside from these state parks, most of the larger forests and wildernesses are a bit of a drive. The Allegheny Mountains are a couple hours’ drive to the west and the beaches of New Jersey and Delaware are about the same distance. Those kinds of trips are part of what makes booking an RV rental in Morgantown, PA so exciting though, by gaining the freedom to go anywhere.
There are no RV parks within the city limits of Morgantown but the wide-open spaces surrounding it are populated with quite a few, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a place to camp with your Morgantown RV rental. Lake in the Wood RV Resort is one of the closest, being only 10 miles away. The park has amenities including full hookups, laundry facilities, dump stations, and bike rentals. They also have mini golf, shuffleboard, and volleyball courts so you can get some outdoor recreation without ever leaving the park.
Sun Valley RV Resort is just a mile down the road and has a swimming pool and hiking trails available. They also provide full hookups, laundry, and a playground for the little ones. Another option is French Creek State Park, also about a 15-minute drive from Morgantown. The park has fewer amenities but is in a more naturalistic setting and you can even rent kayaks on nearby Hopewell Lake.
If you’re only staying for a couple of nights, you might consider parking the Morgantown camper rental at the Walmart that’s a couple miles east of town. You’ll need to ask the manager for permission and you won’t have access to electricity or water.
Despite its very small population, Morgantown has quite a lot to offer tourists. While you’ll surely want to make some day trips to visit the Hershey Factory (about an hour’s drive away) or see a traditional Amish community, you won’t want to miss the small town charm right at the doorstep of your Morgantown motorhome rental.
If you’ve ever dreamt of seeing Pennsylvania Dutch Country from the air, consider booking a hot air balloon ride. Be sure you bring your camera because the views will be out of this world.
One thing you’ll surely want to do with your Morgantown travel trailer rental is enjoying some locally produced foods. At one of the nearby apple orchards, you’ll find some of the most delicious ciders in the state, not to mention the opportunity to pick your own apples and berries for enjoying back at home. The cheese store in nearby Honeybrook is another place to visit, with its amazing selection of gourmet cheese. If fine wines are more your jam, check out the local winery and you can taste all of their scrumptious wines.
