Discover Weatherly

Originally established in 1825 as Black Creek, Weatherly, Pennsylvania is a former industrial town that nestles in the Appalachian Mountains in the heart of Carbon County. It was renamed in 1848 after local clockmaker David Weatherly who agreed to build a clock if the town was named after him, although he snuck away without keeping his end of the deal.

During the early 20th century, Weatherly was home to silk mills, foundries, and a cigar factory, with Italians, Poles, and Germans among the migrants who settled in the region. Today, its historic streets offer a peaceful destination to rent an RV while exploring the surrounding nature reserves and charming towns of Carbon County.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Weatherly and head south to the Glen Onoko Falls, a nature reserve that encompasses a series of cascades. Follow the steep hiking trail that leads to the biggest and most impressive - the Onoko Falls - that cascade just over 195 feet. Rock scrambles and a tunnel of rhododendrons make this an adventurous hike, with the option to continue on to the Hidden Sweet Falls.

Directly east of Weatherly is the Lehigh Gorge State Park, which sprawls across just over 4,500 acres around the Lehigh Gorge. This dramatic natural gorge stretches along the Lehigh River from a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control dam to the town of Jim Thorpe, with some adventurous rapids along the way. Join a local white water rafting outfit to paddle down the river or embark on part of the 26-mile-long Lehigh Gorge Trail.

Weatherly is also within easy access of the Tuscarora State Park, which is named after the Tuscarora Indians who once inhabited the area. You can stretch your legs on one of the hiking trails that follow a former logging road or ascend to the summit of Locust Mountain for sweeping views. The park centers around Tuscarora Lake, which is ringed by a walking trail and is a popular spot for fishing to lure bass, yellow perch, and trout.

RV Parks

Pick up your campervan rental in Weatherly and pull into one of the RV sites at the Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, which lies around 20 minutes’ drive to the south. There is a range of pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups available, as well as a swimming pool and hay rides that kids will love.

Another nearby option is the Riders Resort in nearby Lehighton that is the first motorcycle enthusiast campground in the area. Aside from its RV sites, there’s a large swimming pool where you can cool off in the summer months and a barbecue area where you can mingle with other guests.

RVers with big rigs might want to book a spot at the StonyBrook RV Resort where you’ll find a good selection of 50-amp RV sites to select from. This family-friendly campground in Lehighton is dotted with picnic tables where you can enjoy meals, and there’s complimentary Wi-Fi available throughout the property.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Weatherly and make the short drive north to the Eckley Miners' Village Museum. It’s located where a company-owned coal mining town was established in 1854 and offers an insight into life in a typical northeast Pennsylvania “patch” town. The museum details the experiences of immigrant anthracite coal miners and their families during the 19th century, as well as the filming of the movie The Molly Maguires here in the late 1960s.

You can make the 15-minute drive south to Jim Thorpe and spend a day exploring its historical attractions. Visit the Italianate villa of former coal and railroad magnate Asa Packer, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features lavishly adorned rooms with period furnishings. Then head to the stone-built Old Jail Museum where you can tour the historic cells and hear chilling tales of the executions that took place here.

Another must-see destination in Jim Thorpe is the Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center, which details the prehistory of the region and the development of the town today. Learn about the lifestyle of the Lenape Indians who first inhabited the land before the discovery of anthracite coal by early European settlers. Hear tales of the Switchback Gravity Railroad and the “golden age” of what was then known as Mauch Chunk before it was renamed and revived as Jim Thorpe after the great Native American Olympian.

The town is home to a small market where you can pick up basic supplies, as well as a gas station if you need to fill up your camper rental in Weatherly. Or, you can make the 25-minute drive into Lehighton where there’s a more extensive range of services.

Whether you’re visiting Carbon County for its cultural museums or scenic hikes, book an RV in Weatherly and start exploring.
