Originally established in 1867 following the Civil War, Aubrey became known for its peanut farms that surrounded the town. Today, though, the peanut farms have been replaced by new home constructions. Just north is Ray Roberts Lake State Park in Pilot Point. To the south is Lewisville Lake near Lewisville.
