Cherokee, Texas is located in San Saba County, which is in Central Texas. The town is named for the nearby Cherokee Creek which is, obviously, named for the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans who were native to the region. The town was first established in the 1850s, with the first post office opening in 1858. Ranching and hunting form the basis of the economic activity in Cherokee.
