Most settlements in the wild west of the mid-1800s formed naturally at an intersection of major roads or near an abundant source of water. In contrast, Ector, TX, was created for the local farmers’ convenience. The nearby Red River was dammed upstream, and as a result, the farmers lacked an easy way to transport their crops and trade goods. They negotiated with a now-defunct railroad to lay down tracks and create a shipping stop that they could use to load their products. This stop was originally called Victor Station.

Like many other railroad stops, a small settlement grew around it. In the 1880s, a post office was established, which necessitated officially founding the town. The residents chose “Ector” in a nod to one of the first residents, Ector Owen.

Today, Ector, TX, is a small town with around 600 residents. The closest large town is Bonham, about six miles east. Though Ector lacks the same amenities and attractions that a larger city might have, its proximity to the other neighboring towns as well as several wilderness parks makes it an ideal place to rent an RV.

Discover Ector

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to book an RV in Ector, TX, is to get more immediate access to nature. Imagine waking up on a cool, refreshing morning to birdsong and wind blowing through the trees. A hotel room can’t compare to that. Thousands of ponds and lakes pepper northern Texas. While most are on private ranchlands, there are several options open to the public. Lake Bonham Park is a modest 1,000-acre lake and park with a couple of boat ramps and a few miles of hiking trails that skirt the perimeter of the lake. The freshwater lake is stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish. All boats larger than kayaks or canoes must have permits.

For some more elbow room and quiet, head over to Lake Texoma, a massive reservoir and one of the largest in the United States that offers endless opportunities for aquatic recreational fun. Swim, sail, parasail, and more. Fishing, of course, is a popular activity, too. Due to a geological quirk that leaches salt into it, the lake is a unique mix of saltwater and freshwater, and striped sea bass, a species commonly found in the open ocean, thrives in this landlocked body of water. Anglers can also expect to catch freshwater fish like largemouth bass, catfish, and carp. Hikers and other landlubbers can enjoy this park, too. There are several miles of hiking trails, and low rock cliff walls, boulders, and shallow caves that climbers test their skills on. Dotting the shore at several points are campgrounds, RV parks, and marinas. Bring an Ector camper rental. You’ll be in good company.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in Ector, be sure to figure out where you’ll park it while you embark on an adventure. Though most campgrounds and RV parks are up near Lake Texoma, there are a dozen or so options within 30 miles of Ector. Oasis RV Park in Whitewright, is a fairly spartan campground, offering only full hookups. Though it does not include laundry, there is a laundry facility just across the street.

Route 82 RV Park in Savoy, may be an option if more amenities are desired. In addition to laundry and restroom access, it includes WiFi, cable, and a gym. The grounds abut a small fishing pond, too.

Exploring the City

Roam the Texas plains in an Ector luxury RV rental and find all the little out-of-way businesses, shops, museums, and roadside stands. Bonham was founded by one of the first settlers in northern Texas, Bailey Inglish. When the Indian raids on the fledgling settlement increased, Inglish built a fort in the 1830s to protect the residents. Several buildings, log cabins, and the stockade are still standing today and can be toured. Get a glimpse into the lives of the pioneers and a sense for the danger they underwent daily in an attempt to build a better life.

Even out in the boonies, Texans love their golfing. The Legacy Ridge Golf Club’s fairway was designed by a former PGA champion and renowned architect Bill Johnston. Artificial waterfalls fed by babbling streams provide a pleasant background sound. The courses are lined by mature trees. The club regularly hosts tournaments and charitable fundraisers.

It seems like every other town has its own donut shop, and each one has its own twist on the classic donut. Over in Denison, is Donut Palace, which has won several baking awards over the years. Don’t be deceived by the unassuming interior; customers regularly line up out the doors in the mornings to get fresh, right-out-of-the-fryer donuts. They regularly run out of donuts within minutes; for large orders, it’s recommended that you call in advance to reserve the rings.

At the end of a long day of adventuring and driving between the far-apart towns, set down outside an RV rental and enjoy a well-earned donut. Enjoy the endless Texas sunshine, warm breezes, and friendly locals.
