Created in 1958 when the dam was completed in Texas, Lake Murvaul supplies water to the local towns as well as the power to plants in the area. Shortly after its opening, the local community realized it was an excellent recreational spot and claimed it for fishing, too. Unfortunately, at the time, in spite of the new law desegregating schools and other utilities, the lake was segregated. The original structures used during this time are still standing today, though the evidence of this time is long erased.

Getting Outdoors
Under the endless blue sky, the Texas sun scorches the land. In spite of the dry, arid climate, hardwood trees and conifers loom tall, providing some welcome relief below. Though Lake Murvaul is a smaller one, encompassing nearly 4,000 acres, it’s considered one of the finest fishing spots in east Texas. The lake regularly produces trophy-sized largemouth bass, and channel catfish and crappie are quite impressive, too. They swim in the tea-stained water fed by several creeks. The decaying underwater timber, as well as other aquatic vegetation, give them plenty of cover to use. There are four boat ramps open to the public and a few fishing piers.
Camping at Lake Murvaul
When you rent an RV, be sure to plan for where you’ll park the rental RV while you go on a fishing adventure. Though this rural part of Texas is more laid-back, the country roads are narrow and often lack a safe spot to pull over for a few hours. The lake has three public campgrounds. Of the three options, Decker Hill also has a fish-cleaning station, weigh station, and a bait and tackle shop.
Exploring the Area
Everything in Texas seems supersized, from buildings and homes to trucks and the distances in between towns. Renting a motorhome to explore the wide-open prairie countryside in comfort is almost a requirement. Carthage is a small-but-growing town that’s rapidly adding new restaurants, businesses, and other endeavors. The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame honors musicians who contributed to the industry, particularly those who were born in Texas. The museum’s vaulted halls are lined with photographs, records, memorabilia, and other artifacts. A shortlist of performers honored by the museum includes Kenny Rogers, Mickey Gilley, and Moe Bandy.
