Malakoff is a city in Henderson County, Texas, named after a Russian fort that was prominent in the Crimean War. It was initially known as Caney Creek and Mitcham Chapel, names already being used as post offices; the postal service rejected the city's names for its post office application and recommended “Malakoff” instead. One of Malakoff's claims to fame is its “Malakoff Man” discovery, a collection of three carved heads; further excavation of the discovery site yielded no results, and their origin is a mystery. Some suggest they were carved by a Mesoamerican culture, the Olmecs. Malakoff relied on coal mining earlier to support its economy; brick production was added later. The unusual local soil yielded a type of clay that was used to make the bricks. A local citizen, Mr. Thomas Anthony Bartlett, created a procedure in 1904 for artificially coloring the bricks which led to a new era of architectural elegance.

Book an RV in Henderson County, and you are one step closer to an enjoyable vacation. There are other towns and cities worth exploring too. Mabank was created when the Texas Trunk Railroad missed nearby Lawndale; two Lawndale citizens developed the new city, and many Lawndale citizens and businesses moved to Mabank one mile away. Canton hosts First Monday Trade Days, a tradition that began with bartering and swapping surplus items (dogs, donkeys, antiques, etc.) and grew into one of the largest flea markets in the world. Brownsboro was originally a neighbor of a Norwegian community, Normandy, but many of the Norwegians moved away after a number of them died in the summer of 1847; Brownsboro and Normandy merged, setting the present day city's boundaries. Jacksonville's topography is an area of rolling hills; the intersection of U.S. Highways 69 (running north-south) and 79 (running east-west) is near the city's downtown area. Corsicana has a history of effective female leadership; women's groups founded the Corsicana Female Literary Institute (1857-1870) and Corsicana's first public library (opened in 1901). Your Malakoff travel trailer rental will put you in the driver's seat, offering you a bird's-eye view of this county's history and culture.

The Great Outdoors

Purtis Creek State Park is a popular fishing destination, either by boat or from one of the lake's piers. No license is required, and anglers can try for catch-and-release bass, catfish, and crappie (the catfish and crappie can be kept). Visitors can also canoe, kayak or swim in the lake. Hiking and biking in the park are allowed, as is geocaching and camping. Keep your Malakoff RV trailer rental close by and take your catch of fish straight from the lake to the fridge, until it is time to cook it.

Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area is an ecotone floodplain separating the Post Oak Savannah and Blackland Prairie ecological regions. It experiences frequent flooding which, along with unique clay soils, produces a plentiful and varied array of vegetation; this situation supports a widely diverse population of bottomland and wetland wildlife. Hunting and fishing are allowed, as are hiking, biking, horseback riding, and many other activities. Visitors should be aware that there is thick undergrowth including poison ivy and should dress appropriately.

Gus Engeling WMA is open all year round except during hunting season; visitors can contact the Texas Parks & Wildlife Service for more specific information. Entry into the park is through designated points, and visitors must sign in and out. Public access is during daylight hours. The landscape consists of hardwood bottomland floodplains and watercourses such as wetlands, marshes, and swamps. Visitors may fish and hunt, with rifle or bow, hike, take photographs, and some other activities; guests should know there are venomous snakes and should be cautious if hiking.
