Melissa is a city in Collin County, Texas, that was was settled as early as 1853 with the arrival of a post office. The town plan was laid out in 1872, at the same time as the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. The town's economy was largely based on agriculture and the railroad was instrumental in shipping cattle, wood, hay, corn, and wheat to market. By 1900, Melissa had become an essential shipping point. The town flourished until the 1920s when two natural disasters wreaked havoc upon the town. The economy and population began to decline as a result. Today. Melissa is accessed by three major highways, State Highway 5, State Highway 121 and U.S. Route 75.
