Porter, Texas, a small residential area just 27 miles north of Houston, but worlds away in its lifestyle. As one of hundreds of unincorporated communities across the United States, Porter is not so much defined by official borders as by the landmarks selected by its inhabitants.

Porter is mostly used as a legal entity for statistical purposes, but it is a legal part of Montgomery County along with Conroe (the county seat) and other towns and cities. It is within driving distance of Austin, Beaumont and Cypress. Local celebrities include Robert Crippen, who piloted the very first space shuttle orbital test flight (and commanded three more flights), and Jason Head, season 11 winner of “The Voice”.

Grocery shopping should be a breeze when you book an RV in Porter. The city has a good selection of both local stores as well as bigger chains. Walmart has two centers, both in Porter, where you can park your Porter rental RV for a night or two while you plot your next destination. There are two farms near Porter but one is equestrian only it seems; finding locally grown produce might be more difficult but is always worth the challenge.

The Great Outdoors

Porter is a stone's throw from Lake Houston Wilderness Park, which hosts camping, hiking and horseback riding trails, kayaking and a nature center. It has wooden observation decks, where enthusiasts can view animals and the scenery from an elevation, an outdoor swimming pool, a dormitory-style hostel and is dog-friendly.

Forty miles to the north lies Sam Houston National Forest, one of four national forests located in Texas. It is over 163,000 acres in size and borders Lake Conroe to the west and Trinity River to the east. There are many hiking trails that wind their way through the forest; one of these, the Lone Star Hiking Trail, is 128 miles long and has been awarded National Recreation Trail status. It is divided into three sections, so that hikers may complete the path at their leisure.

The Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Reserve in Humble, Texas, is a good place to engage in animal watching. Hawks can occasionally be seen, as well as the typical garden-variety creatures; the reserve is heavily forested and provides ample shade; some of the trails are boarded (you must walk on an elevated platform, in order to protect the local fauna and vegetation from being trampled) and there is a children's playground and picnic pavilion guests can enjoy.

Adrenaline junkies can enjoy an outdoor racing park in New Caney, a round of paintball and an indoor skydiving arena. Woodlands has an outdoor concert pavilion that is well used; park your Porter rental camper nearby and enjoy the concert from the comfort of your new home. RV Parks

There are numerous parks and campgrounds to choose from (too many to list them all here) when seeking a place to plant the rental motorhome near Porter; a few parks are north towards Conroe, and a couple more are on US-105, at the foot of Sam Houston National Forest. Most, however, are clustered between Humble and Splendora. Porter RV Park and Smith Village RV Park are directly south of Porter itself. Just outside of Porter, the options include Cunningham Cove RV Park and RV Park of Kingwood.

North of Porter, near New Caney, there are a few more parks, including Forest Retreat RV Park, Cutler Road RV Park, Legend's RV Resort and Lone Star Lakes RV Park. East on US-1485 is the appropriately if not originally named 1485 East RV Park. Finally, north of Woodbranch is Grand Texas RV Resort, on US-242. Many of these RV sites have laundry facilities, some may have limited food services, convenience stores and possibly cooking facilities.

Exploring The City

There is a good variety of food selections here in Porter, some based in locally owned and operated restaurants plus the usual selection of chain restaurants. When you rent an RV in Porter, you can find Japanese and Chinese outlets, Mexican and Italian, burger joints and even a donut shop if you are so inclined. Diners here have reported that the Mexican restaurants have a good selection of items you don't often see on a menu, and that the Mexican dishes represent the culture’s cuisine from the very south to the far north. Chile rellenos, chimichangas and menudo received especially high praise, and you can take the leftovers back to your Porter rental motorhome to be served up as lunch the next day.
