In Eastland County in the west-central region of Texas, Ranger is like many other nearby towns and cities in this part of The Lone Star State. It owes its existence to the discovery of large oil deposits in the region. Towards the close of WWI, a severe drought struck the Ranger region. Residents persuaded the Texas and Pacific Coal Company in nearby Thurber to explore for oil locally. What happened next was the stuff of legends; McCleskey Number 1 well blew, resulting in a flow of 1,700 barrels per day. In oil-gush times (circa 1920), Ranger’s population topped more than 16,000 souls.

The Wichita Falls-to-Ranger-Fort Worth Railroad literally put Ranger on the map. After changing its name to Wichita Falls and Southern Railroad, the line closed in 1954. Fast forward, and Ranger remains firmly on the Texas map, with Interstate 20 bypassing the city to the south and east, and Abilene less than 70 miles west. Fort Worth is the eastbound destination a tad over 80 miles in distance.

Book an RV in Eastland County, and you can enjoy the exciting attractions in and around Ranger. You certainly will not be disappointed driving your Ranger RV rental as you cruise through charming countryside. Prepare for change, if you are a city dweller.

The Roaring Ranger Oil Boom Museum is right in the city and provides some interesting insight into the town’s history. You'll likely need rubber boots to visit this treasure because mud surrounds the site. It's manufactured mud rather than the real thing, but it does produce the desired effect. The museum highlights the time the town "struck it rich," with artifacts, photos, and other exhibits on display.

Perhaps the most interesting attraction is Eastland County Museum, which is less than ten miles away as the crow flies (although the road does wind a bit). Ranger’s existence may have been down to the discovery of oil a century ago. "Black gold" is what they called oil, and the city developed rapidly upon its discovery. Today, the legacy is a quaint little city and a tranquil place to rent an RV for as long as your batteries need charging.
